I've had an op-up rate of exactly 50% since I attained Silver... sounds like an uneven distribution of luck
Silver has been quite good for me flying solo on CX - Gold sounds more useful for if I had people to fly with, and also (as suggested above) for benefits on other Oneworld airlines.

Depends heavily on the "premium-ness" of the routing I guess? As SL and then GO, I've had a fairly strong op-up rate around 25% of flights.
But then again I mostly fly into KA markets with fewer MPC members and a consistently overbooked Y.

KA 997 in March, Y to J
CX 888 (HKG-JFK) in June, W to J
CX 391 in August, Y to W
CX 611 in August, Y to J
as synthkeys suggested, this seems like just luck, but it does make me feel good about continuing to fly CX

Upgrade to J, but PE was not full
Earlier this year, I was graded to J; however, out of curiosity during the flight, I went and took a look at PE class cabin and there was 2-3 empty seats remaining. Was the upgrade purely random and based on luck? Just being curious.
