Not sure if this is applicable for 888, but for 889, they recently started name checking pax with their passport on a list when disembarking the JFK-YVR portion of the flight. Not sure if they're doing this as well for 888 as they only started doing this for 889 a year or so ago

Signage at checkin advised that all passengers traveling to the USA must undergo additional security checks. The signage specifically stated that passengers on 888 will undergo screening in YVR.

second that on my recent (24 Jun) experience as well... the PA announcement telling everyone who's continuing not to leave the aircraft or they may not be able to get in again.
I was booked into the later afternoon flight from YVR to HKG so i promptly made my way through immigration, then back in security again to the Skyteam Lounge to enjoy the bed lol. By the time I cleared security there was NO QUEUE in the boarding area and gate is emptied already. I was among the first few in clearing immigration and the only one clearing security. BTW, the duty free shops are all closed when I arrived back (though it was around 2-3am as we got a 2 hours delay).

AND BTW, if next time anyone got so much time in transit in YVR, i would highly recommend to go out to the outlet just 15 minutes away instead of enjoying the lounge, unless you are a big fan of World Cup like me!

I just took CX888 from HKG-YVR-JFK. There is no longer a holding pen. Transferring passengers were separated from the arriving passengers, went through an abbreviated CBSA process upstairs while the arriving passengers went downstairs, were rescreened by CATSA , and then released into the terminal. We Had enough time to relax in the lounge for a bit before we reboarded.

Seems to be in conflict with https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration...gibility.html?

Anyone one have actual experience with CX888 being a non-Canadian citizen with final destination to JFK?

It looks like the link you are referencing is for travelers connecting to a precleared flight, which this is not. Seems like it would be wise to check with Cathay, but I am guessing that if you aren’t eligible to enter Camnada, there may be a holding room for you?
I unfortunately can’t help on the ETA account as US citizens are exempt from ETA.

I took it recently and a Canadian visa/ETA is required at checkin time. Once in YVR no one asked to see my Canadian visa, nor did I have to go through immigration. It's just the makeshift passport/boarding pass check followed by security screening, then I was in the terminal at a normal boarding gate.
