What to do at HKG for some of 8 hours
We arrive on a Monday in May at 3:30 PM from LAX. We depart for JNB at 11:45 PM that day. We are flying Business (U). Wife flew CP before (20 years ago, before the "new" airport) and I have not flown on them or been to HKG.
We have no interest in taking a train or other and leaving the AP. We are a bit older and do not sleep all that well on the plane. We have a big trip ahead of us in Africa and need to avoid "issues".
At this point we are planning to just sit in whatever lounge (which one, or are there choices?) that we qualify for the full time.
Is there anything else to do on the grounds?
We also need to take our Malaria pill with food, on the plane to HKG a bit before Noon HKG time. I think this is about 9:30 am LAX time??? (one of us will keep LA time until we land in JNB). Anyone know the food schedule on this flight? CP897. Seems like on other very long flights, we are awakened a few hours before landing for a meal, almost regardless of the time? It is likely we could get a sandwich in Business at our chosen time in any case?
This timing will also be used for our normal pills and eye drops.
Thank you.

I'm guessing you're on CX897... you can stay in the lounge as long as you want, there's no time limit when your in transit between the two flights you're booked on (except when they close at 12:30 am). You can even transfer between the different lounges (there are 4 of them) given you have 8 hours. Aside from that there's only really shopping or eating to do in HKG in my opinion. If you have OW Emerald status you can use the First class lounges, or just the Business class ones if you don't have status. Also there's the Qantas lounge which you're allowed to use since you're travelling on CX Business class if you get bored of the 4 lounges.
Since it's a reward ticket, maybe you can try to get on the later CX 885 which arrives 3 1/2 hours later at HKG to shorten your connection time if that's an option for you.

There's a zillion threads on HKG layovers in the Hong Kong/Macau forum...
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hong-kong-macau-436/
There's also a lounge thread in this (CX) forum:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/catha...unge-faqs.html
that you can access from the FAQ thread:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/catha...s-newbies.html
Hope this information helps. Perhaps search and read a bit and if you have further questions that need clarification they can be addressed?

OP, given you're clearly a seasoned FT member, search around here a bit! Tons of good info.
There are countless threads about all your questions. Many of these are these most popularly-commented topics. J service / meal standards, what to do on long layovers, which lounges to use in HK, menus for your precise flight #, mid-flight snacks, etc. etc. etc. and many more. I know it's easier to start a new thread but searching is always appreciated instead of having millions of repetitive threads. FT search isn't the best, use the advanced search function to winnow down.

My searches seemed to have data which involved leaving the AP and coming back for the layovers.
My snack question or meal within 3 hrs before landing was not answered by my searches. Looking specifically for flight 897 LAX to HGK
We have not been to the "new" HKG, so we were not sure it size, etc in finding the most appropriate lounge for use.
Thank you. I can take it from here!
Business Lounges are a bit different one from another at HGK. It is worthwhile to review them before you go. Here is a link:

Here is a link for a number of things to do AT HKG and nearby during a layover

One option without leaving the airport is to go to terminal 2 (but you need to go through the immigration). There are a lot of shops there, restaurants (better food than those found in the business lounge) and also an IMAX theatre.

8 hours in lounges is a very long time. Even a quick trip into the city (25 mins one way) to take the Star Ferry and back, walk the greets for an hour or two would still leave you 4 hours to lounge.
But matter for you...
HKG is probably one of the few airports where waiting that amount of time might be alright - if you like shopping.

JClasstraveler thank you for the conformation of the time! Maybe we will venture out, but unlikely.
We are 72. Two of us drive to rent a car in Escondido. Each drive back. Load up. Drive to LAX and return rental car. Jitney to LAX. Jitney to AP hotel. Reverse jitney in the Early AM to LAX. Hassle with check in, luggage, TSA, boarding and 15 hour flight. Then the 8 hrs layover with 13 more hours of flight. Arrive too early in JNB. Get luggage, stall a bit. Hope there is a land side eatery at JNB (?) to have food and next malaria pill. Then make it to the AP hotel (close) and wait to get a room. Next AM fly to Hoedspruit, get on some sort of transport to lodge, and do lunch (?) and then a safari drive.
Return, unpack and collapse before dinner and a night safari drive. Did I mention we do not sleep well on a plane. Experience of 50+ opportunities. We might be able with some wine, dose a bit in the lounge! The Pier has Resting pods...that might allow a bit of a snooze...if that is appropriate?
Wudang...thank you. I checked out the IMAX. Even with the EN clicked, there was not enough English to figure times, costs and programing! They have a comment program to win 2 free tickets, but no way to figure how to comment!

One option is the Regal hotel...they have a daytime rate/flexible check in and check out rates. Its located at the airport.
I haven't stayed there before, but will be doing so next week as we have a long layover and a 2 year old.
I've had long layovers in HKG before and there is plenty to do and places to rest...but now that we have a 2 year old we decided to get a room.

Useful for a shower and a coffee/light breakfast. BA forum would have some more detail.
A few dining options, but I've never tried..if you need a prepaid SIM, Vodacom and MTN have outlets in the arrivals area. In case you've not booked the airport hotel, I'd recommend one of the Peermonts at Emperors Palace- while requiring a shuttle, you'll have a few decent dining options /casino if that's your thing (I've gotten cheap cheap rates via Expedia or booking.com member pricing..).

I will definitely try this next time I'm stuck there for a while~
It would be so much nicer if they are past passport control in T1.

Tell the crew not to wake you for breakfast on arriving into HKG
You will get a Do Not Disturb sticker to stick on you blanket or top side of your seat.
I live in HKG but have a house in Joburg for many years.

Before you leave you should spend time to visit the Joburg open zoo. One of the best in the world and you are just meters away from the animals.
They have shuttles around the zoo so you do not have to walk the whole way if you choose not to.

Hoedspruit (Hat Stream) is about 250 miles north of Joburg in Limpopo province
It has a tiny civil airport (I think Eastgate ) which is shared with the military base runway.
You could get transport on arrival in Joburg with driver and get there before lunch time the same day you arrive instead of booking into the airport hotel and wasting a day
