I can't remember if it's stated on the card mailer.

If not, call them 2860 0360 and ask them to state.

This is a great add, thanks Percy!

I (dare I say we?) have so many credit cards that we no longer use after we take advantage of the welcome offer or the bank changes its scheme, does anyone have any thoughts or best practices on when to cancel a card?

For example, I am debating whether I should cancel my DBS Platinum and even my DBS Black Amex cards. With its low HK$/AM, it's hard to see why I would ever use these cards.

I keep because:

- I make full use of the Eminent 6% online offer

- churning DBS is meaningless

Thanks Percy!

Another way to ask the board a question. What are the best cards to churn?

Citi and Amex. And not all the time.

Certainly none of the US 100,000 mile/5-in-24 BS here.

I've just updated the wiki. Citi's gone down a bit.

And it's useless to churn DBS card because they seldom provide good welcome offers?

Percy senpai - I applied for the Citi PremierMiles card in late November, and it was finally approved yesterday. Will I still get the slightly more generous welcome offer that was prevailing when I applied?

$1/mile for "only" $5,000 not worth my time. YMMV.

Question Novice Questions

Dear FlyerTalk CX forum members,

I moved to HK last July, and am a complete novice when it comes to credit cards, especially HK ones.

I need a credit card, so I just applied online today for the DBS Eminent Visa card, but started to regret it as soon as I hit send, as I am started to realize maybe it's not a particularly attractive card.

That's when I thought of this forum, and decided to ask for all of your wisdom and advice on what card I should select, based on the following points:

- Rather obvious, but I would like a good CX mileage earn rate for any spend.

- I travel a lot for business, so I would like no foreign currency transaction fees.

- My biggest single cost on travel overseas would probably be settling my hotel bill.

- In HK I would be using the card primarily for dining.

- My wife doesn't have an income, so we would appreciate a dependant card.

- My wife's primary use for the card would be grocery shopping and gas.

- we do typically take two vacations abroad a year, not necessarily flying CX though.

Lastly, I noticed today that a lot of cards have attractive promotional earn rates for the first couple of months upon receiving the card.

We plan on going on two or three personal trips between mid March and end of June. How do I plan the timing around applying for a card to take advantage of the best promotions and what would be a good card for foreign shopping (and depending on the timing, buying tickets to Europe and Japan.

Any thoughts and advice would be most appreciated. Apologies in advance for the novice questions.

Let me just try and clarify two things:

"Rather obvious, but I would like a good CX mileage earn rate for any spend"

"we do typically take two vacations abroad a year, not necessarily flying CX though"

So which flights do you see yourself working towards?
Because if it's HKExpress, perhaps I ought to stop you right here and restart this conversation at hongkongcard.com - perhaps have you maximise cash rebate instead.

And if you travel a lot for business aren't you claiming the overseas expenses back from your employer, in which case foreign currency transaction fees are not your problem?

The problem with hongkongcard is that is is overwhelmingly in Chinese, which may not be much help to the OP (nor me).

I don't spend nearly enough in a 3-6 month period to unlock these sign up bonuses. Any suggestions on how to meet the minimum spend requirements? What options are there that don't involve reselling iphones? Stock up on Manning's/PnS gift vouchers?

Utility bill payment if your card supports it.

Thanks for the response, percysmith.

Let me try to clarify a bit:

- For business travel, I tend to fly mostly Cathay, so CX miles are the majority of mileage I earn. I sometimes fly to Taipei on BR or Europe on LX, but I try to keep business travel to CX/Dragon.

- If I can earn more CX miles through credit card use, I can realistically start thinking about booking award tickets on CX for vacations, but as I have family of five (incl myself), that's still a lot of mileage to earn.

- Would love to ask similar question on hong kongcard.com, but I read and write zero Chinese.
