OK, thanks (sounds same as LHR T5 then). Arrivals lounge is an option (travelling in J). The person travelling with me will have checked luggage - will that luggage make its own way safely onto the onward flight (same ticket) - i.e. we don't have to do a USA style claim & recheck of luggage? (I've been to HKG before, but it is many years since I have checked luggage in anywhere.)

Thanks, sounds better to keep it simple and just go straight through arrivals and then back airside at the end of the day. It would likely be daytime 12 hours, roughly 8am-8pm. I searched for and read some threads on what to do in HKG for the day, but was checking the detail about getting landside on connections.

I just did this when I missed my connecting flight. The staff at the Pier didn't ask too many questions but they did tell me that it would take a while for someone to come get me. At the doorway between the lift and the arrivals level there was someone checking our passports, though it was pretty much smooth sailing the entire way.

Luggage will be checked through, just confirm that with the check-in agent/your bag tags at your point of origin. Simply head out, to the Arrival lounge, and then to the train to the city (located immediately above the Arrival lounge). You can get a same day return ticket to Kowloon or Central for the same price as a one way.

The reason I say, around 730-9am there is morning rush at lounge and the breakfast even at F-lounge is nothing worthy of getting out of way. You are better off minimizing time wasted, get to town and do your things and come back to airport early (say 4pm) and enjoy lounge in a relaxed manner with dinner.

in all honesty you are better off straight head off to arrival lounge, get quick shower and head to town for a proper breakfast. Yes the consensus appears using departure side lounge is possible albeit some members here do not look upon well of such practice, with staff probably couldn't care less just you have more tedious process to get out to landside.

Question -- if my flight was from Terminal 2 and I wanted to hit the Centurion Lounge is there anyway do immigration at T1 instead? Lounges in T1 are abysmal.

but to answer your question anyway,...? There are no flights from T2, it is counters only. 100pct of HKG airside is Terminal 1. HKiA just uses the phraseology of T1 and T2 because they don't have enough check-in counter space at T1. But all the gates are there. "T2" check-in just leads to you T1 airside anyway.

Have a J flight next week arriving in hkg with a 9 hr layover and would like to confirm the following plan of action
Step 1: arrive, clear immigration, proceed towards arrival lounge and either leave my carryon inside the lounge or utilize one of the paid lockers.
step 2: head into town for 5-6 hours.
step 3: return 2 hours prior to departure, head straight to arrival lounge ( assuming my J boarding pass will allow access) pickup my carryon and go to departure lounge, shower and get on next flight.
step 4: once on flight, ponder what I missed in HK from tourism perspective? Lol

I would leave bag at left luggage instead of arrival lounge.

And if your bag were to “walk” away while you are in town either intentionally or unintentionally? Last time I checked, the bag is not checked with a ticket, you just leave it in an alcove right after entering the lounge.
