Yea sorry, I guess it really is the airports that make the rules. I'm still new to the international flying thing and I usually overprepare and think about situations/scenarios the average person wouldn't think about.

Its interesting because when I visited the HK site I saw nothing about the weight but it definitely showed about the size limitations for carry on luggage.

I just visited their web page. They do not mention the weight limit.

Anyway, getting overprepared is a good idea.

it's actually mentioned in the Baggage Information - Cabin Baggage page:

http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_...ageinformation

The total weight entitlements of your cabin baggage are as follows:
  • First Class/Invitation, Diamond tier members - 15kg (33 lbs)
  • Business Class/Gold, Silver tier members - 10kg (22 lbs)
  • Economy Class - 7kg (15lbs)
+ If you are travelling in two classes on one journey (split class or mixed class travel), you can enjoy the greater allowance for the whole journey.

Your problem will be that you have three - a backpack, a notebook and a briefcase. You need CX to allow it, and they may not unless you are in a premium cabin or if you are a MPC SL/GO/DM (or perhaps OW SA/EM). ...

Are MPC Silvers flying in Y definitely entitled to the orange tag for oversized carryons at HKIA? Thanks!

If you are checking one bag whats the big deal about checking 2 ? why do you need so much luggage on board ? all you do is hold up the boarding and clog up the overhead bins. I fly 250 000 miles a year and never need to take more than a 5-7 kg bag and my laptop on board. Are you expecting a mid flight change of clothes or are you planning a fashion parade for the other passengers. The stupid restrictions are there for a reason, so if you dont like them then better you find another airline to fly with that allows you any amount of carry on as long as it fits into the overhead bins. I can only think that Easyjet dont currently stretch to HKG or TPE

There is nothing definite unless stated as a benefit.

No, nor are Silvers flying in J either I don't think. I'm not actually even sure anyone is "entitled" to an orange tag.

Hi guys

I have an important question: Does anyone know if Cathay Pacific weighs carry on luggage or somehow enforces carry on weight limits?

Also, is a backpack with your laptop combined along with your carry on suitcase to create this weight requirement?

This is my first international flight and just recently saw their ridiculous carry on limit of 15 pounds!! I'm not trying to put 50 pounds in my carry on but I think its pretty easy to be a little over 15 pounds.

I had a very bad experience in the past with doing checked luggage so I now try to avoid it whenever possible (luggage was lost for a month the first time I ever flew). I'll still have to do checked luggage but i'll do my best to only put stuff I care little about in it.

Thanks for any help and i'm glad to now be a part of this forum

Phillip

Hi Philip,

I'm a student, like you, and traveled long haul (CX 826 HKG-YYZ) this August. I did the exact same that you're planning to do. the duffel bag and then a laptop w/ case. PLUS i had a small carry on suitcase.

I was in econ, and had no status in CX, though that doesn't really matter because it's HK Airport checking your stuff and not CX. No one really cared what I was carrying and no one really cared. If you can stick your laptop in one of your carry ons before you go in security, and you just take it out for x ray and put it back in when you're done, then i think ur fine.

i stuck my laptop in my duffel when i was at the airport and just took it back out when I was on the flight.

Also, CX tends to be lenient on students on weight limits in terms of check ins (but i don't think check in bags are a problem for you). One of my check ins were overweight, and she said she'll let it go.

Don't know if i was lucky or not, but i've never had any problems with cathay, hkg, and weight limits before.

hope that helps you a bit.

Well, when flying J, who cares what status you are? You will get the tag.

Are you saying it's all random as to who gets an orange tag?

I suppose your reply was to my question. Have you ever flown without checking in luggage?

I personally do not fly 250,000 miles a year and thank every waking minute of my life that I don't. I'm happy to let you have all the bragging rights that come with such travel, but please tell me what the reason is for the stupid restrictions at HKIA, and why CX amongst other airlines allow their front-cabin pax and elites additional carry-on allowance if the airport restriction runs counter to the stated benefits? As I noted earlier, I have never heard of a J pax being denied an orange tag request.

Nobody has the "right" to get the orange tag. Having status or flying in the premium cabin will help. It also depends on whether the request is reasonable.

I think there are different circumstances for different people. For myself, I have my bags packed for a trip day after tomorrow. 1 22 kg (49 lb) checked bag and a 9 kg (20 lb) carry-on bag for a 3.5 week leisure trip to 4 different destinations. The only thing I have in my carry-on is a Scubapro regulator bag with over $3000 worth of scuba gear (titanium reg and dive computer) which I choose not to check for obvious reasons, a folder with my air, hotel, and other reservations, toilet kit with medications, and 100 ml bag of small liquids, and an extra pair of socks and underwear. The latter few items all being necessities on a 28 hr trip to DCA-SYD and 36 hr trip HKT-DCA. I also have my personal item, a 4 kg (9 lb) laptop including case and accessories. Since my trip is starting on AA I am limited to 50 lbs of checked luggage, and yes I can check more than one bag, but I really don't want to be lugging around 4 bags instead of 3 as I am traveling alone and 3 bags is perfectly manageable, but 4 becomes a challenge. FWIW, my trips includes QF, CX and KA and I am flying F, or J where F is unavailable. The KA website says their carry-on limitation is 5 kg (11 lb). I am ow sapphire, and will turn to ow emerald through AAdvantage mid-trip, so I doubt the non-AA airlines will have that info yet even if it matters.

I am really happy I stumbled across this thread, because now I know to ask for a orange tag at HKG. If I run into weight problems, I will remove my Scubapro bag, from my carry-on and put my medications in there and then check my carry-on as my second checked bag. At least that is my current plan.

The nice thing is if I purchase items during my travels, I can add them to my checked luggage (if I can find space) as AA will not be the one weighing them for my return trip, CX will and my weight limit is 40 kg (88 lb). Not that I will get near that, as that is quite heavy.

Any additional insights as to whether I will encounter problems would be greatly appreciated, and/or helpful hints. Thanks.

Your CX overall weight limit may be 40kg, but the per bag weight limit is 32kg. http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_...ggageallowance

I have never had my carry on weighed by CX or KA - it is the size they are more interested in for the orange tag, and that is what the checkers at the entry to security are looking for. I've certainly had stuffed carry-ons on CX (very often) and KA (occasionally) which needed a tag for size (nominally carry-on size, but a bit over when stuffed full) and weighed over 20kg without any problem. On KA if you have an oversize carry-on it helps if you are on an A330 since that has far more carry-on space than the A320/1s.

Christep,

Thanks for the info. That's what I get for not reading the footnotes. I doubt I will get anywhere near the 32 kg checked bag limit either.

As far as carry-on size, I am a bit over at 52x37x23cm (20.5x14.6x9 in) vs the allowed of 56x36x23cm (22x14x9 in) so I guess the orange tag is still in order. My contingency plan is still there if needed.

FWIW, I am on an A320 HKG-HKT and back, but I don't think an extra cm width is going to matter that much, especially in J where there are 2 less seats per row.

Thanks again for the info.

Dont forget 32 kg is only trans pacific and they are doing all they can to reduce that asap

Although I agree that no one is entitled to it, travel class and status definately helps in your request for it. As a DM i've never been refused it, but i know GO pax have also got it when requested.

http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_...ggageallowance

Says that 32kg is the maximum per bag on all CX routes.
