What is BN and why does it affect op-up
I never know what that BN number thing is on the boarding pass, but the lower my # the more I get op-ups it seems. What is it? Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but I'm hitting home-runs with op-up lately, four round trips to PEK last two weeks and have six op-ups (two J-F, four J-F). Also got op-upped CSX-HKG last week and TPE-HKG on KA. Back to that BN thing, one of my colleagues who is also reg DM (we're not DM+ or anything) had a lower BN than me, and we were boarding a few days ago and he got a J-F op up and I stayed put in J. Is that number the reason, and if so how is it assigned?

Boarding Number - the number assigned in the order of check-in, including OLCI. If two persons have the same status, their BNs will determine the op-up priority.
|
When your BP is rejected by the BP reader at the gate, the gate agent will check the BN to see if you have an op-up.
|
I had BN: 001 when I checked-in online exactly 48 hours prior to departure.
|
People are now fighting to get BN001 as I find that even if you OLCI within 1 minute of the openign of the flight there will be at least 2-5 people trying to checkin as well.
Of course the lower the BN the more priority you get in terms of opups, invol bumps etc... (of course basing on the fact that all things being equal). Therefore lets say there are 5 DMs on 1 flight and there are only 2 opups to F, then to be fair they will just select the person that did OLCI first. Also sometimes they opup in OLCI as well. |
I see, thx.
|
It is entirely possible to get a BN before the 48 hour mark when OLCI opens... if you are on a connecting flights and checked in at the airport before the 48 hours, you will be checked in before everyone else does online... :p

All things being equal? If I happen to have more club miles but a higher BN than another GO, who will get op-upped?

BN will determine the priority and Club Miles should not be in consideration. If you are value enough to CX they would've given you IN and DM+

I got an upgrade that way.

I thought I would share an expereince that i just enountered the other day on CX with the op-ups......(Am a CXDM member).
I was on the CX morning flight to BKK holding my M class ticket (22/2). I did the online check in the night before and got BN:52, i was lucky enough to get the U/G to 16K on check in, which was a definate thril, however, when boarding the flight, my BP was rejected by the BP reader at the gate and they had a new printed BP for me, Seat 2A. Was definately thrilled at this, but not sure how could it be possible considering that i never knew they would double bump up a pax. I was sure that there must have been some GO or SL members in J. Is this possible or was it just a technical glitch that day, have any others experiences similar situations.....would love to know if this happens alot or was it my once in a life time thrill..... If anyone has a good theory to getting the comp u/g, do share.... |

I suppose the upgrade at check-in is also an op-up, not a mileage upgrade. I so, it sounded like a glitch. The normal practice is to bump a J to F to make room for your op-up.
Take it with a smile!:) The likely scenario (especially on the morning 3 class BKK flights) is that not a lot of pax book into J and F, therefore J might be full of opups anyway (also may be there is a tour group or 2 in Y) so they firstly opup pax to J, then they find they are still OB in Y so they need to further opup pax into F and from the J cabin, prob no one with DM or higher status, so they selected you. Anyway hope you had a good flight! |
