How often are you being greeted onboard

I am not sure what is the rules for the manager to greet MPC members on Board. My experience is around 1 in 5 flight, someone will come and welcome me and hand me a bottle of water. The best time was they offer me to have "Priority Meal" , eating meal ahead of other Y..well, I won't want to do that, looks odd!.... anyway, i usually give up the dinner from LAX, just wrong timing...

Just curious...

I am greated often enough, but not as an MPC member always. They are just trying to get everyone seated, when it is a full flight and I don't worry about it. THey treat me well with the priority baggage and lounge and let me do my thing. I don't even let it affect me.

I get greeted about 80% of the time (and 100% on long haul) - the times I don't it is when the flight is at full load and a short one. I always get addressed by name (even in economy). On dinner flights in economy the ISM or Senior Purser regularly offers me wine from bus, or even first.

So I have no complaints at all in this regard.

I find on my long haul flights between Sydney and Hong Kong I never get any special treatment. Only occasionally on the Taipei and Hong Kong routes. Then when they do greet me I get first pick of meals, wine from business class and all the staff know I am there and know my name.

Could be just specific crews bother with it and when they do acknowledge that you have MPO status, they treat you well even though you are only in Y.

Mind you, on the SYD-HKG flights, there are probably a lot of MPO members even in Y (not that I am in Y all that often on that route).

I don't know if this is a coincidence, but when I used to travel as a QF Gold, I would always get a greeting in Y (everyone gets a greeting in J/F).

But since I have been travelling as a MPO Gold, I have never been greeted in Y!

I think it might depend on what tier with MPO you are. I think that Silvers don't get any special greetings whereas Golds and DMs do. I am a Silver and seldom get any special treatment - but see that Golds around me are personal greeted by the ISM.

I think that while there is a rule for CX crews that all Gold / DMs should be greeted and adressed by name, there is no rule that any elites get a first choice for meals or business class meals offered. But some crews do that - even for me as Silver.

When I was Silver, I got greeted 100% of the times. As a Green, I got greeted about 75% of the time.

I guess to have "Enhanced" Y service is only possible when the flight is obviosuly non full. As when other PAX aware of MPO members having things from J, they will be unhappy or feel being treated unfair. Worst if they being turn down if nonStatus PAX request for the same service , say icecream from J. So to avoid making other PAX unhappy and losing them...they will try to keep MPO memeber low profile , or just really hand them a bottle of water.
But if I really want wine from J, as I dislike Y wine which seldom are good, how should I request? Or i should be passive all the time..to avoid having embarass situation..

On my recent NRT-TPE flight (CX451), I was in in a crowded Y cabin, yet the purser came over and greeted me personally. I did not see similar treatment in my vicinity. Maybe due to OW Sapphire? Anyways, it was one of the more pleasant shuttle flights I've been on, in or out of the US.

cardenio98 Aug 29, 2005 4:14 am

If you want the wine from J, just politely ask them (discreetly if you are in a packed section of the cabin). I think the FA goes off and checks with the ISM usually saying things like "the items for business class are strictly controlled so I have to check..." and they look up your status.

If you get a No outright, then you need to discreetly make them aware of the fact you have status in MPO. Just say something along the lines of "I've been told my club status allows this". That's usually enough to get them to run off and check. I always mention this in a long-winded fashion without being arrogant. Everytime I've got my wine from J!!! :D

The most important thing to remember when requesting J items from the Y cabin is to ASK, not tell. That may sound obvious but...

But that is blatantly misusing your MPC status as an excuse for something that is NOT part of your being a member to allow this.

If you must do that... do it only when the ISM comes to greet you and you can then ask if you can have a 'taste' of the Business Class wine. Then it's ok. But I wouldn't push for 'special' privileges when the cabin crew really doesn't know who the h*ll you are.

Even I, as DM, do not pull rank and ask for something impossible unless it is being offered. I have heard of other Club members doing things like using the F class toilets for example simply because they think they can. That shows how low class certain MPC members can get.

Guy Betsy,

Often I agree with your points but this time I disagree. The cabin crew can always say no and if they do, I won't complain, kick up a stink, write letters to CX etc etc etc. I know I am not entitled to it but if I ask and it is given then I don't see a problem with doing that. Probably my attitude comes from being a product buyer for too many years and always trying to get the best I can for the price.

I don't own shares in CX but spend money on them like I do and I don't see a problem of letting the staff know that. Arrogant. Yes, probably. But it's no different than people checking in on flights or hotels and asking if there is a chance of an upgrade. Funnily enough, I don't ever ask for upgrades when checking in!

Yeah, I might be abusing my privilage. I will bear your comments in mind next time and might reconsider before making these requests. However the flip side is that in the past I've had the wrong thing done by me by CX FAs so I began using my status as leverage. Neither of us is right I suppose, just different points of view.

cheers!

christep Aug 31, 2005 10:09 am

My thinking on this is that if the crew aren't interested enough (or, more likely, are too busy) to look up on the manifest who the top tier members on board are then they probably won't appreciate you thrusting it in their face. I never get upset about not getting anything extra for being Diamond, and I only ask for "something special" if the ISM/Purser has specifically greeted me and asked me if there is anything s/he could get me.

Wongo Aug 31, 2005 6:29 pm

I flew 3 times as QF gold.... I had nil greetings. Nevemind. Got 2 more CX flight coming up next week. woohoo.
Then again, flying in super-discount Y doesn't help. At least they open up exit rows for me most of the time if possible.
