i've scored double a few times but not lately. i also think it's getting rare. j to f can still happen quite often.

What are the changes of a Y-J op-up from ICN-HKG or HKG-MEL? I am only an AAPlat, but hoping to get an op-up or two, especially on the HKG-MEL or MEL-HKG sector!

<dupe post>

SORRY!

Guy Betsy Aug 12, 2005 4:56 pm

I just got an op-up from J->F from HKG-MEL yesterday which is not unusual.. but it was an award ticket issued AA!

But then again, CX had my MPC DM number down, so that helped a lot especially since there were many other QF Emeralds around! :D

Does this mean you had multiple FF numbers on the one ticket? How do you do that?

No. I only had one.

sxc Aug 14, 2005 6:26 am

So after you had your AA award ticket issued, you rang up and asked them to put your CX number on the reservation instead?

Guy Betsy Aug 14, 2005 9:10 am

Having AA # on an award ticket is useless.. besides I know my CX MPC DM means more to CX than AA. I also made sure that my BA flight carried my BA Gold number instead of AA's too. That releases certain seats otherwise blocked for advance seat selection.

I am presently batting 100% on op ups from Y to J in July and August. Have been flying HKG BKK quite a bit and because load factors are so high at this time of year, have yet to see the economy cabin. Also scored a two way op-up HKG NY in July for me and my wife (who has no frequent flyer status at all). As far as I am concerned, Cathay are the op-up kings. By contrast I have been op-upped once by Qantas in seven years of flying.

My Upgrade Batting Ratio

I've been upgraded 12 of the last 13 flights I have made on CX since July (most long haul).

I always fly in J, but I don't always buy J, I study the loading using http://www.flyaow.com/classavailability.htm . Where the flight is full or oversold in Y, but empy in J (J9C9D9I9) you can be pretty much guarenteed a free opup form Y to J. Free opups is like money in the bank! Especially if your buying your own airfare (not company paid)

This is often the case on the summertime runs to LAX & back.

Higher the status great the chance

CX is the best for Op-up's (80% currently for me) they look for CX Diamonds first then OW Emeralds next then CX gold.
BA/Qantas use their own all the way down then WO Emeralds.
Note do not ask for any special meals as this reduces your chances!

Guy Betsy Oct 7, 2005 7:05 pm

Actually I beg to differ on a few of your comments.

With CX, reserving a special meal will not reduce your chances of an op-up. Your meal will just be catered on china shoudl you receive an op-up.

With CX, the pecking order for op-ups are as follows:
CX Invitation
CX Diamond
CX Gold
OW Emerald
OW Sapphire
CX Silver
OW Ruby

Sometimes even CX Green/ Asiamiles members gets ahead of OW Sapphire. I have seen it happen before!

Why can this happen? (as they have a "priority list" in their system, isn't it?)
And it will not be fair for all other tiers that are higher than Green and Asiamiles...

I have talked to a CX agent at the Pier lounge in HKG

and she told me it will be CX diamond then OW Emerald, then CX gold then OW sapphire......etc..

Hmmm Guy Betsy - I don't know about this. I travel a lot with colleagues who are CX Gold and have always been op-upped ahead of them. In fact, I have seen many sad faces as they head to the back of the plane. I have never asked anyone at Cathay how it works, so I don't know, but my personal experience has always been that the OW Emeralds (I have a colleague who is a BA Gold I travel with a lot) get an op up ahead of the CX Golds.
