Internet access on CX?
 
This will be my first time flying CX. Do they offer Internet access on their 747-400 in business class? (LAX-HKG)

Not really, no. They have an onboard cache of some webpages but that's a waste of space. They also have some sort of store & forward email system which requires you to open a new email account. Details here: http://www.cathaypacific.com/intl/in...on/0,,,00.html

This is probably the weakest part of CX's onboard service in the premium cabins - as far as I know they haven't yet announced any plans to get ahead of other airlines that are now trialling true internet access.

Having said that, they do have audio/video on demand with about 25-30 movies, 20-ish short features, 100 CDs of audio, plus the usual "channel" type stuff. Details here: http://www.cathaypacific.com/intl/in...nt/0,,,00.html
So you might not miss the 'net access.

I just today from CX 830 HKG-JFK in J class. Both ways, I was not able to gain access to their inflight email system called Netvigator. I downloaded the software and registered online prior to the flight. I received a user name and password. When I got onboard, I asked the FA for ths USB cable. I plugged it into the computer and my windows software did not recognize the hardware onboard. I had a feeling it wasn't going to work even before I left. I was stuck making an expensive phone call somewhere near the North Pole. :mad:

I had the same problem ages ago, and spent hours trying to get it to work (new drivers, all that sort of thing...) and it doesn't. I notice that CX doesn't seem to mention the laughable "web cache" any more - maybe that has gone. Hopefully soon they will see the light and realise that what is needed is an ethernet connection with DHCP and no messing around required.

Well I installed the software, etc. Tried registering many times (different days, different computers). Everytime I got a message saying the server was busy.

Plugged in the USB cable and the software said modem not found. Tried a few ports. The e-mail 'feature' on CX is USELESS.
