Ah that's good enough. Thanks for your suggestion! I'll probably order one before my flight next Friday

The cut-off time for ordering a cake (and with payment also collected) is generally 24 hours before departure. The CX agents I talk to on the phone recommend 48 hours.
I remember the cutoff is T-48. As with many things regarding CX CS, I would act asap instead of relying on their word. |

Seeing these cakes makes me even more sad that CX is now so lazy with desserts in J. Desserts are always something moussy in a glass now. It used to be a choice of a cake plus some other kind of dessert.
Some people like to complain about a certain aspect of catering, hoping that airline would improve it. But experiences told us airline would just remove the "unpopular" option without any replacement, leaving all passengers with fewer choices. But indeed the trend in CX JCL is giving fewer choices to passengers. I guess more choices increases catering complexity. Short haul moussy dessert — removed, long haul 2nd appetizer — removed, long haul 2nd dessert — removed. Now we can worry how long could 6 choices entree on long haul flights last (burger & noodle inclusive). |

I order a cake when I fly long haul couple times a year as a tradition (I eat a slice, and give the rest to the crew to eat after taking a picture). A crew member once told me it cheered her up years ago, so I never stopped doing it...plus I want CX to keep offering this since not many airlines do it (it makes the flight more fun).
ex-HKG is usually a white fruit cake, and ex-LAX is chocolate (the routes I generally fly). Custom messages and cake type aren't guaranteed...and you need to schedule couple days in advance. Here are some cakes over the years I randomly pulled from my google photos so you can get an idea what the cakes look like. Hope this helps! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5b612f311e.jpg ex-LAX (Dec 2019) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...42cfda78ae.jpg ex-HKG (Dec 2020) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...07a722ae40.jpg ex-HKG (Jan 2020) https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...20b2e2ac1a.jpg ex-YVR (Jan 2020) https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d987eef8a9.jpg ex-LAX (Jan 2020) https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...b543464e97.jpg ex-HKG (Feb 2024) https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5cb45fec0f.jpg ex-CDG (Feb 2024) |
Just as an update to this thread after the original post.
Ordered a cake on Saturday (7JUN) for my flight this Friday (13JUN). They were unable to confirm it at the time due to "Needing to check with the caterer" but sent a payment link which was paid shortly after the call. Today, after contacting CX CS to see if the status of the cake is confirmed, they claim the request has still been sent to the caterer but no updates can be provided and it is not confirmed. They told us to check again 24 hours prior to the flight. Not sure if this is normal but just wanted to post this here. |
So to order we just call Cathay 48 hours before the flight and ask for one.
Do they give you a choice of type of cake? |

Do note, if you occasionally suffer from "quantity over quality" (me? never! umm ....) the cakes don't look that big 😁
They do look like decent quality though. |
I traveled Thanksgiving weekend, and got cakes per my tradition. Some new cake data points to share...for my ex-HKG flight, it looks like they sometimes do two smaller cakes now instead of one bigger cake.
For ex-TPE in economy (where food service feels straight chaos because flight attendants are rushing due to short flight time), I found out there was enough time to take a picture and eat a slice of cake haha. CX crew is very efficient. It actually was one of the best tasting cakes too. I'm flying from Shanghai (PVG) Christmastime, and can report back what kind of cake they do in a few weeks https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/imag...es/biggrin.gif https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...44b16a81f5.jpg ex-LAX (Nov 2025) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8fa32d514b.jpg ex-TPE (Nov 2025) https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8210e79ec6.jpg ex-HKG (Nov 2025) |
quite inconsiderate to order a cake on TPE flight....why don't you try Guangzhou next time?

I seem to remember Singapore Airlines offer a cake for free for your birthday (I was only Gold). You just order a few days before. CX should at least offer it to Diamonds for free.
Also, regarding desserts in general on CX, it’s very poor on regional J with only Haagen Dazs. I’m sure other airlines do a proper dessert in J with ice cream. Long haul is still ok. |

I’d always choose birthday op-up over a cake any day assuming it’s choosing either one.

i always pay to have a proper dessert than what CX serve for free if i wanted to eat a proper sweets

Why would anyone buy themselves a huge cake one can't even eat alone on a plane? I don't get it.
