CX Economy Flex

Does anyone know if CX Economy Flex is considered a full Economy fare? The price difference between Economy Flex and Premium Economy is minimal, but the Elite points awarded by Iberia are significantly different: 100 for Economy Flex versus 500 for Premium Economy. Thank you.

Welcome to FT!

yes it is, Flex = full
(Light & Essential = Discount)

pricing doesn't matter w.r.t. full or discount

I've been able to snag PY Essential for ~US$40 less than Y Light, for the same flight - prices as shown on the CX official website
It's just how their pricing mechanism works

Thank you for your response. In my situation, Iberia classifies the Economy Flex fare from FRA to HKG as a discounted Economy ticket. If it were considered a full Economy fare, I should have received 400 Elite points instead of only 100. This discrepancy has left me short of the Elite points needed to upgrade to OW Emerald. Could you please advise which airline I should contact regarding this issue? Thank you.

no , i dont think Flex = Full.
i think Full or not is depends on the class , i guess K class or up is full may be . S/N/Q should be discounted even on Flex.

CX Economy fare comes with subclass(bucket code) with markups (lite/essential/flex)
usually the lite/essential/flex is under the same subclass if you buy from CX directly.

If you would credit to other airline, the markup won’t help because the accumulation is only determined by the subclass.

Eg: if you fly HKG-PVG in S lite you can get 8 status points in S flex you’ll get 20. If you credit to Iberia you’ll get the same mileage accumulated.

you can regard lite/essential/flex as the additional benefit CX sells, including seat selection, baggage, mileage… etc

If crediting to Iberia, you’ll have to contact Iberia.

Dear all, thank you very much for the information.
@blueboat, My ticket number is VR41XXXX, booked in V class, which includes free seat selection, free date changes, and two pieces of 23 kg luggage. When I booked the ticket, the price difference between Economy Flex and Premium Economy was minimal, and I was expecting to earn 133 Status points with CX. I did not anticipate receiving only 100 Elite points from Iberia.
I will book Premium Economy when crediting points to Iberia for my flights with CX. For my return trip on 13-FEB-2025, I will credit the points back to CX. Additionally, I have booked a trip from FRA to MAD to compensate for the missing Elite points for Upgrade. I have already contacted Iberia but have not received a response yet.

I like your pragmatism, but I don't understand if the fare difference between Econ flex and PE was minimal, why didn't you book PE? Or you needed the flex? Wonder if your can upfare to PE if the fare difference remains small.

he wanted more points , so he booked the flex.
i think he is looking at V class Flex vs lower premium class with light , so it comes out just small difference with price , however the lower premium class light give less points than the Flex. 75% of the time , i book the econ Flex for more points.

Obviously I know nothing about CX but I had a look for FRA-HKG, in V class, Flex is 60, Essential 50 and light 45. PE in E (essential) is 60? So unless one needs the flex, why book V-Flex and not E-Essential...
Particularly if credditing to IB, but live and learn for OP.

In economy all three light, essential and flex are usually based on the same single fare bucket (e.g. Q). They just add a fixed amount (usually 600 between light and essential) to reflect the added benefits of your ticket.
If you look at EF fares, you can see that CX has listed many different fares Q**** for each fare bucket (single digit).
Actually, various fare buckets offer the same benefits (change fee, cancel fee, etc..), it is just the price that varies from the cheapest available bucket.
To get a higher fare bucket in order to get more AM or upgrade opportunity, you need to call. Same regarding the validity of the ticket (i.e. if you might wish to extend your stay beyond 21 days for example, but are uncertain yet).

they just removed the light for premium and business class. they do sell light for premium and business before , so i believe he is looking at premium light before , and thats why the price can close to V-flex but less points than that.

Dear all, I truly appreciate your responses and the information you’ve shared. I once flew PE on a trip from FRA to HKG (Seat 30A) and earned 500 Elite points for Iberia. Initially, the aircraft was scheduled to be an Airbus A350-1000, but it was changed to a Boeing 777-300 by the time of the flight. The experience wasn’t significantly different from Economy, though it was acceptable at a cost of 2.5 euros per point. However, this time, it would have cost 13 euros per point, which is less appealing. Usually I pay 1.1 euro per point when I fly with Iberia.

For this journey, I booked my ticket over six months in advance, initially expecting to fly on an Airbus A350-1000. I selected seat 60A in Economy Flex. However, I noticed the aircraft was changed again to a Boeing 777-300. Before the flight, I contacted Iberia to confirm how many Elite points I would earn, but the answers varied. I assumed I would receive 400 Elite points for this flight, which would have been more than enough for the 200 Elite points needed for an upgrade to Iberia + Platino (OWE).

It’s been a learning experience. Moving forward, if I need flexibility and more Status points for CX, I’ll book Economy Flex, but if I’m crediting points to Iberia, I’ll opt for PE.
