Delayed baggage compensation?

Hi guys, quick question: I recently took a trip from HKG-NRT-SEA. The trip from HKG-SEA was on CX that ended up being delayed by 2 hours due to a mechanical issue. This resulted in a 10-15 minute connection at NRT-SEA on JL. Somehow, I was able to make my connection but my bags were delayed until the next day. Just wondering if there’s anything here to claim for compensation, thanks!

I assume that you mean that HKG to NRT was on CX and that this was on a single ticket HKG-NRT-SEA.
If so, the "responsible" party is JL by international agreements. I suppose that they got your bag delivered to you the next day.
If you do not live in US, you could have bought some essentials for a day and could ask for reimbursement.
If you live in US, that is usually not granted by airlines as you return home.

Surely this is exactly what travel insurance is for?

Correct, you need to ask JL for compensation, if any, not CX, even if CX is the one causing the delay.
