I was in the same position as you, but I think I've now screwed up. I tried doing the "put booking on hold, speak to upgrade people, confirm bookings" approach outlined in the Wiki on this thread (https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cath...on-thread.html), but the phone agents (3 separate ones) all told me that wasn't possible. Instead they said I should just check availability online, make the cash booking for flights where there is availability, and then process the upgrade afterwards. So I did, but now I've ended up with my upgrades waitlisted, even though the availability is showing to make a new award booking in Premium Eco, and I now have 44,000 Amex points stuck in my Asia Miles account unless the upgrades clear.

Still trying to figure out what exactly is going on, but my best guess is to ignore any award availability that says "just a few seats left" - this seems to actually mean "no upgrade availability". On my flight dates, the only flight that the phone agents can see for an upgrade is the one without the "just a few seats left" tagline. So I reckon if you book flights that don't say "just a few seats left", you might actually be able to upgrade with miles. And although the ticket is free cancel within 24 hours, apparently the World of Winners code cannot be used on an alternative booking if I cancel the first one.

Good luck!

I was fearful of a similar situation - I booked the 'free' ticket but note that only the waitlist is available. Do we think 22k MRs each way from Amex are worth the PE upgrade? Already have seat allocation, 2 x 23KG bags, and lounge access at both MAN and HKG (although not CX lounge, but the Centurion lounge in HKG is nice). I am in 2 minds...

I also wonder if they will offer any upgrade bidding opportunity at check-in?

Update on this. It seems that with CX, you can be waitlisted for an upgrade with no miles taken. If I get the upgrade (4 days before the journey) they will contract me to process the miles required. Now I figure that if all goes well with Amex transfer - I might just manage it with a bit of luck and no risk. Needless to say, I am now on the waitlist and waiting with bated breath.

I thought so - both my flights are A350 which looks like a nice PE seat, and it's a long overnight flight... But I guess depends how many MRs you have to spare!

Side-note - the new upgrade award chart now makes it 23k to upgrade I think, not clear if that applies to flights already booked for after 1st Oct.

I was insanely busy last week for personal reasons and stupidly forgot to redeem my free flight. I guess that's a loss!

It would be interesting to know how many of the 3,000-ish tickets were actually redeemed. I'd imagine a large number would be put off after they realised the "free" ticket actually required £320 of fees, and others would have done it but missed the deadline.

Anyone manage to upgrade to premium economy on these tickets? Cannot find any option to upgrade on MMB

I did!

After making the waitlist upgrade booking, both outbound and return sectors cleared (on the 30th Sep, just before the new award chart came into play). There was a hoo-ha with this and transferring from Amex... but it did eventually get sorted.

As luck would have it, I was sat at the gate at MAN for my outbound leg and got my first-ever Op-Up to business. (Remember this return flight cost only around £300 with the promo + the miles to upgrade to PE)!

Sadly, no such upgrade on return and I gotta say I wasn't overly excited with the CX PE product; I wouldn't use it again for cash or miles.

By the way, it books into O class, so no TP or Avios.

Hi there, why no lounge access at HKG?
I am using my BA silver with this 'World of Winners ticket' and hoping to use the CX lounges at both LHR and HKG, is this possible as OW carrier with OW sapphire status?

I've just checked in for my flight MAN-HKG and on the boarding pass details it invites me to visit the lounge. I am OW Emerald, so you should also get this for Sapphire too!

Yes, I had no problem with BA Silver and Lounge Access (CDG and all HKG lounges) on my World of Winners trip last October.

Hello

I meant that I already had access (via Amex Plat) so didn't really need Airline lounge access.

I also had my BA Silver status on this booking (after the upgrade to PE was complete and the ticket issued) and indeed, you can access CX lounges as expected.
