no option to upgrade using miles
 
I am interested in using miles to upgrade my economy class ticket LAX- HKG, the website only gives me option to use cash, it is because I have no miles in my account? I plan to transfer points from AMEX, but would like to know availability before I do transfer.

In the past you needed to call in to check on award upgrade availability. Even if you could directly use miles to redeem a seat in a desired class, that doesn't mean there was upgrade availability from a lower class.

You also need to be holding a ticket of eligible booking class and fare.
