How do you get that? ILAURGB8 (LHR-PVG) is $2408. The cheapest LHR-HKG is ILAVRGB8 at $3499. That has a 7 day minimum stay requirement. If OP is staying less than 7 days, the cheapest LHR-HKG would be DAA5OGB8 at $4601.

OP said he bought ILAURGB8 in March, so I used the historical fare on 31MAR. On 31MAR, ILAURGB8 (LON-SHA r. t.) was 1850GBP+tax, and ILAVRGB8 (LON-HKG r. t.) was 1655GBP+tax. Please refer to my earlier post with all the fare information. You are right that it comes with a 7-day min. stay restriction.

The fares vary considerably based on which date in March the ticket was purchased. For example, if purchased on March 1, the fare was 3370 GBP.

As I read the OP, he's not going to PVG, that's the issue.

Are you going to PVG, or just HKG? If you're not going to PVG, you'll have to refare the ticket.

Yes, long story short I don't need to go to Shanghai, I'm travelling into mainland china but not in PVG area anymore

Ok I re-read the post. If I understand correctly, OP has a ticket of LHR-HKG//PVG-xHKG-LHR and want to change it to LHR-HKG-LHR. In this case, of course OP can change it when he arrives at HKG, provided that there's I class on the day he wants to fly inbound.

What if there isn't I class available? Can I pay more for to make my HKG-LHR? leg higher fare class I don't mind let's saying pay £1000 or so to change but I would feel pretty sick having to pay double that. It's a business expense and it's my fault but the bean counters would be upset if I didn't make a honest attempt to save money.

Have you called them to ask how much the change will be?

If there is no I class and you need to buy D class, the fare diff. would be considerably high, as the historical round-trip fare for LONHKG for D class is 5050GBP+tax. For 28MAR19, the fare is the same as the 31MAR19 fare I looked up.

That seems the most sensible advice.

For anybody who is interested in the outcome, it is exactly as many suggested, just the fare difference plus change fee.

I've been waiting because the fare kept changing a lot and I've been looking every couple of days, it was pretty high and I almost decided to knock it on the head, get the remains of a refund and pick a new itinerary with BA, however BA's price doubled and Cathay's came down to a fare change that was manageable.

So my advice is to others is to hold on and wait until you can because CX prices seem to change a lot more than some competition just on this routing for example.
