You definitely will get a red beep for a documents check. Using online check in and self printing of boarding passes doesn't stop CX from checking your documents. It's happened to me multiple times.

I did a three part trip last week: CX from HKG to TPE to meet up with mates, then JL TPE to NRT for rugby then back on UO.

I couldn't even get a BP for HKG-TPE one-way on Avios tix. Had to be printed at desk. Docs checked and onward tix asked for.

At TPE, online BP was obtained, but docs check was still carried out on me when one of my mates checked in bags. Strangely, onward tix (which would've been the UO tix) not asked for.

If you don't get the response you need I suggest you do as I did and extend the stay in HKG. If I recall correctly, it was less than $100 USD and allowed me to get my luggage and move on. Saying that, I did spend some time touring in Vietnam and loved it, so if you can squeeze in even 48 hours I'm sure you wont regret it.

We spent time in Hanoi on the outbound, and have been to Vietnam 3 times in 5 years now, so I think it’s time to see something else! Thanks, though.

Anyone tried short checking a bag in more recent times?

bagold Apr 22, 2024 5:08 am

No issue. I flew LAX-HKG-SIN but bags only checked to HKG.

How long was the transit at HKG?

trasodaa Apr 22, 2024 7:06 am

Earlier this year, my travel companion and I travelled on MXP-HKG-XXX route with reward ticket and revenue ticket, and holding QR G* and CX SL* respectively. We were both denied to check our bags to HKG only, and the station manager in red clothes told us CX prevent checking bags to HKG if the ticket doesn’t allow a stopover. I didn’t argue much since the outsourced lady seemed to be experienced. We ended up approaching transit desk in HKG to end our journey, and the ground service company (forgot the name) spent an extra hour to find our bags.

Follow up - not taking last CX return leg

Hello,

Following up. Considering booking
a trip cash ticket

Outbound:
Bali - HKG- BOS

return:
BOS DFW HKG DPS

Don’t have checked bags and may not take the very last leg of the return: HKG To DPS ( Bali)
Exit at HKG.

Would I pay a no show fee for not flying the last leg after flying the two prior legs BOS DFW HKG ? So they Automatically, charge or do not in practice?
Thanks

if you really need just book HKG-DPS at 1 calendar day as <24hour stop is a 'transit' then you can ask for short-check the bag.

but if you skip last leg there may be repercussion

I've yet to hear a single person report of "repercussions" despite hearing about this trick on Flyertalk for well over a decade. Has times changed and airlines are actually starting to crack down now?

Whenever I ask call center agents during reservations when they will charge no show fees, they always said that it's charged when the passenger who initially ditched the last segment(s) and then later decide to use them in future. Then the passenger will be charged the no show fees plus the rebooking fees (if the passenger has to change to other flight times). Probably unless a passenger is a frequent offender or such abuses happen on a large-scale among passengers, CX probably may not actively go after the offenders.

Hi yes correct if one doesn't use the last leg nor would reticket the last leg for reissue.

Yes - last week of Apr 2025 short checked at KHH; overnight transit at HKG (~17hrs)

Not a problem with ground staff - only checked in the KHH-HKG leg at KHH but had to check in & collect BP at HKG airport again

PS was a redemption itinerary

I will be trying this next week as I need to short check from PVG to HKG. Transit is about 3 hours.

Hope you did well.

I short checked to HKG with a transit of 50 minutes last week. Told them the honest truth that I will be making a change after landing in Hong Kong, and the counter just did it straight away.

DP for all (from this week):
Staff at KIX will short-check only for overnight connections, not same day connections

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 9:37 am.
