Cathay typhoon refunds
I bought two PE tickets on Cathay bkk-hkg-lax through Amex Prem travel back in August. The return was for 9/19. I changed them on Aug 30 to depart BKK on 9/16 instead and was charged $100 each by Cathay and $39 each from Amex. On the 15th I was told by Cathay they cancelled my flights, eventually I was rebooked on 17th and missed meeting in LA I rebooked for. Now through Amex cathay says they will not refund the change fee "because they did eventually get me home' and "it was weather related change." Amex has not decided yet on their end.
What do you think about this and can anyone comment or give me advice. Thank you in advance |
You asked for a date change on August 30 (well before the storm ) so it was fair to pay the appropriate change fees. The fact that your flight was subsequently cancelled due to the Typhoon is irrelevant as it happened two weeks later, and in any case they rebooked you on the next available flight on the 17th. Unfortunately as I see it they’re unconnected and CX is right not to refund the charges. |
you wont get refund from CX
amex side not sure. if you are high spenders (200k usd + spending annum) i guess they might refund the petty fee to keep you happy. |

FWIW - CX may have the best in-flight service, CX's CS sucks basically. So I can say for sure that you won't get what you want in a traditional way. If you are serious about the fees paid, then a Small Claims case ($45 filing fee with service) may be your best bet. |

My feeling is that will just add to the loss.
OP's case is in the grey area. So the chance of winning depends on the judge looking at the case (if OP indeed sues CX). Also - CX could settle this case before the trial. Nevertheless - I can say with certainty that OP will not be able to obtain the refund with any traditional methods. So if OP is so desired to fight against CX, this method could work. |
Is there anything specifically mentioned in the CX terms and conditions regarding refundability of change fees? Might be worth checking....

Well...I respect YMMV. But CX CS sucks (Ground, MPC, AM, etc.) IME.

Thanks for all the input. I disagree with some of it but appreciate it nonetheless. As for data points: I was refunded both $100 CX change fees.

I asked Amex to dispute it. Linked them to my Twitter conversation with CX. Amex opened an investigation and a few days later ruled in my favor and refunded me the two $100 change fees.
