Been traveling for the better part of 3 decades, short, medium and long haul. Some trips with middle name and some with none. Never had an issue (Western name).

Sorry to bump this but just wanted to share something I learned from a HK CX phone agent today. I called to add a middle name on a CX issued ticket but she informed that there was a "very recent policy change" wherein CX no longer requires the middle name to appear on the ticket. For those unaware, she suggested to omit the middle name in the passport info online so that there are no issues with OLCI.

I did read somewhere on here though that for people with Chinese character names it was required. Wonder if this will change too. |

OLCI this am, no middle name appears, and the usual warning that passport name and booking name don't match. I called AA: they insist that the middle names are on the booking, and indeed, even read them out for me without prompting. Called CX, and they can't see the middle name. But the agent did confirm this change in policy. I asked them to make a note in the booking, but they just quoted the policy to me and said it won't be an issue. I'm reasonably optimistic it will be OK, but I've not followed the advice above: i.e. I have entered my children's names as on their passport for the OLCI...so let's see. If it really is a change in policy, that shouldn't require pax to actually omit legal information when checking in! If I come across issues will post back. tb |

We're flying in a couple of days on an AA award booking on CX. Both our children have middle names, and because we've encountered major hassles in the past on this issue with CX/KA, I specifically asked the AA agent when I made the booking to enter the middle names on the booking.

It’s probably because AA entered the middle name into the middle name field, next time ask them to put both the first and middle names in the first name field and CX will see it. Same for AS.

In AA's system, the middle name only gets entered into the SSR DOCS field (with passport info), not the name field.

Not sure this helps anyone, but we just booked 2 different reservations on CX via Alaska Miles.
First reservation, the Alaska agent asked for our Middle Name. The Middle Name appeared in the Travel Documentation (Passport section) in the Cathay Manage Booking section as a second word in the First Name section. Also appears in the name just above where it says Alaska Airlines (also in Cathay Manage Booking). Second reservation. Agent didn't ask for middle name. Middle name is not in CX Manage booking at all (but is on the Alaska FF accounts). I called Alaska and they added our middle names to the secure information section of the reservation (agent's words). The agent said it wouldn't appear in the booking (Alaska or Cathay), but it is there. When I asked her about filling out the Passport Info on Cathay, she said only put First Name where it says First Name. I'm inclined to leave the first reservation passport details as is that came over from Alaska (with First Name and Middle Name in the First Name section). For the second reservation, I'm just going to put the actual First Name in First Name. So, it seems there might not still be a consistent way agent's our doing this or what Cathay views as most correct. Based on the DPs, it sounds like both of these options should be fine. Am I missing something? |

On CX there is no need for middle name.
But if it gets added to the first name, that is no problem. Both are fine |
Sorry to revive an old thread, just booked an award ticket on Cathay using my AA FF#. CX system only shows First and Last name - I've had issues in the past where I would show up at Hong Kong airport and they'd most of the time just "stamp" the ticket with an ok because they've seen these issues, but one time I was told this was a no go, and I had a buy a new ticket. Wondering if any American travelers recently faced this issue at Hong Kong airport?
