AsiaMiles for Upgrades

On what non-CX airlines can you use them for upgrades? And with what restrictions?

Wow, I didn't know I could upgrade AA flights using AsiaMiles. (Not that I would feel tempted to do it with what little I have of those AsiaMiles points. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Oh, never!)

Thanks, Wasabi Tofu!

I found incositent information on Asiamiles.com.
According to footnotes of the Asia Miles Awards Chart Web page

http://www.asiamiles.com/am/1,,83101_82761_eng,00.html

Roundtrip upgrades are available for CX/BA/EI/MU/KA/LX, but AA.
So, I called up CX service center.
Fortunately, customer representative said AA is available for asiamiles upgrade award.

AA must have only recently been added.

Pity since AA is terminating their CX upgrades (abeit on full fares) from Sept 2003.

Two questions:

Which BA fare classes can I use AsiaMiles to upgrade?

If I upgrade a BA flight using AsiaMiles, can I credit the miles earned from the flight to AA?

Thank you very much for your help.

Sincerely,

JS

JS,
You can upgrade any BA fare that is itself mileage accruing under the rules of Asiamiles. This amounts to fare codes Y/B/H/K/L/M/T/W/C/D. You can find this information below:

Cheers.

You can but it would involve a lot of letter writing. As CX books upgrades in their award codes like a free ticket, AA's computer will reject it as a paid ticket, hence you must write in and show to AA that the MCO that CX issued you is for an award upgrade and that you are to be credited for the miles from the ticket purchased.

I recently booked a SFO-HKG-DEL ticket on CX. I have tons of miles on AA/KLM which I can not transfer to Asia Miles. I however do have a significant amount of Starwood points which I can convert to Asia Miles.

Our tickets in the H class and I leave in about 15 days. Would it be possible to open an Asia Miles account, transfer the points and get the upgrade in that window? What is the typical availability of these awards; is there a way for me to check the upgrade award inventory? I am AA Plat (OW-Saphire) while my spouse is an AA Gold; does that matter?

Generally you would need 14 days to do an upgrade on CX through Asiamiles. So I would say that you're squeezing in times pretty tightly.

I don't know how much time you would need to transfer Starwood points into Asiamiles, but that alone would take at least 3-4 weeks. Yes you may check the upgrade inventory when you have an Asiamiles account and you may do so online. Or you may call CX res and ask to see your flights in "U" class.

What exactly do you want your AA status to do for you?

Thanks Guy Betsy.
I think we will pass the upgrade chance on this trip. The return HKG-SFO was Y0 when I booked the ticket (though today it is Y4,B4,H2) so an upgrade would have made the flight more comfortable.

Regarding the OneWorld status: I was looking for information on dreamy stuff like higher priority on the upgrade list, double upgrade, op-upgrade http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif etc.

Your AA Platinum (OW Sapphire) status will be after CX's Invitation, Diamond, & Gold members, then other Oneworld Emerald members then you when it comes to possible upgrades. Note the word 'possible' because if the class you're travelling on still has one seat left open, no one will be upgraded.

Anyone interested in a trade of 40K Asiamiles (CX) for AA/AS/UA miles? Thanks.

jkc22 Nov 5, 2003 11:43 am

Bump....

I also have VIP03's to trade for Asiamiles. If you are trying to upgrade on AA, VIP's will work to your aadvantage (pun intended).
