Studio CX

On my first CX Flights in First (FRA-HKG-AKL-HKG-FRA) the inflight entertainment system Studio CX re-initialized at least 2 times per flight. Forcing you to restart and slowly forward-wind the movie. (of course I would not have noticed this if I had not tried to watch all the movies)
Still very pleasant flights just this minor technical problem of the inflight entertainment system.

Unfortunately this is pretty much normal on the StudioCX system. The upside is that I have never seen the system stuff up during the flight - just the minor niggle at the beginning with the re-initialisations.

I just flew SQ NRT-SIN with Wisemen.

OMG !

CX definitely lags behind with their Studio CX.

Studio CX offers something like 37 feature films, 60 short TV programmes, 100 CDs, and 20 audio channels. Oh, and their recent addition of a few Ninendo games.

SQ's WISEMEN system... offers 60 full length feature films, 90 short TV programmes, 200CDs, 20 + audio channels and definitely more Ninetendo and Gameboy options. (I don't play so I didn't count the options). AND SQ does have real Noise Reduction headphones for their premium J/F cabins.

Oh well.. I have lots of SQ flights over CX this/next month.

But I guess I shouldn't complain about CX even without AVOD Studio CX. I just had to endure an 11 hour flight from LAX to NRTon AA in their J. 8 channels of programmes... that's it !

I still don't think you can choose from among 37 movies on a single CX flight, where you can choose from among 60 on SQ.

And may I note (once again) you will be disappointed more in terms of entertainment if you are on a short-haul CX flight and expecting something akin to what SQ has to offer?

I see why SQ has more programmes now... so that it has more chances to break down!

Krisworld scr*wed up today on the MEL-SIN flight. Every few minutes, an 'announcement' would flash on the screen but there would be no actual announcements made. The volume would disappear for about 10 seconds. This went on periodically and it was very irritating... one has to keep rewinding the movie. But the rewind function seem to only stop at certain parts...

Grrrr.

Oh! I miss CX!

I am curious as to why these systems are so prone to failure. If you look at the various boards on flyertalk, this seems to happen to every single airline with an advanced AVOD system. It all sounds like software glitches to me - or hardware bottlenecks in command processing.

From what I believe from my colleague, SQ recycles its monthly movies and therefore they can offer 60 movie channels whereas CX offers something like 29 movies, 87 short features, 100 CDs and move 30 Nintendo Games. The only difference is that SQ has 31 more movies and 100 more CDs which are recycled from previous months programming.

CX also has the ability to opt for the same number of movies that SQ offers but the key question remains, do CX passengers want 60 movies with half of them carried over from previous months programming?

Just something to think about.

29 is the magic number of movies CX offers at once. As for the carrying over of movies from last month, they do that anyway for a few of them. If they carried all of them plus this month's, the total wouldn't be 58, but probably under 50.

I'll take that over AA's 5 movies that keep playing over and over. Plus "Everybody Loves Raymond."

Sorry to bring up this topic again, but what is it with airlines and "Everybody Loves Raymond?" NH/CX/AA/UA/US/DL/CO/VS, etc. etc. etc. all have countless episodes of "Raymond." After looking at AVOD/Cycled movies on a 12+ hour flight I do not love Raymond! What's wrong w/ Seinfeld or Will and Grace? I have probably never seen an actual episode on TV, but on the all-so-common cycled video systems on US-based airlines, I may have seen every episode of Raymond...

And it casts Long Island in SUCH an unfavorable and unattractive light!

FLYaway3x, if you don't like Raymond, then you would actually prefer to fly CX!

In the 'Laughter' offerings on StudioCX (sorry, only have the December copy of the entertianment with me at the moment), they have episodes of Will & Grace, Scrubs, Just Shoot Me and various British comidies.

But then again, I am not sure if they are recycled every month.

Im glad! I'm flying CX889 / CX701 this summer and would very much prefer not to have good ol' Ray as my main source of American TV.

So what's the seal? Does Ray Romano have some kind of hold over Airline execs?

CXstudio can be a bit funny at times and can reset itself but that doesn't happen too often for me. I mostly fly CX SYD-HK and SYD-TPE and the biggest problem I find with CXstudio is that you can get these periods where you can flick through 30 channels and get nothing but black screens!!



This is because everything seems to start at once and then there is a delay before the movie/TV show/whatever cycles through and starts again...

At least it's better than nothing.

BTW: I do not like Raymond.

Initially, I also thought that was a big disadvantage, but then I realized it was a nice way for me to know that the next cycle in another channel I wanted to follow would start soon (in the meantime, I could catch up on a bit of reading). Of course, a far nicer scenario would be for CX to provide AVOD to economy class passengers.

(Raymond I don't mind so much. But then again, I haven't seen him on UK telly, so I only see him when I travel to Asia.)

In a way I agree with you but I'm one of those badly organised frequent travellers.....

My iPod is always only half charged for that SYD-HK route (9 hrs), I never have any reading marterial on the plane etc etc.

I think I'll just have to grab out the company AMEX and buy some magazines at the airport before I depart (and spend less time in the CX lounge )
