Upgrading on a Y Fare

I am flying SFO-HKG-SFO next week. I paid a Y fare. Is it possible to upgrade that with AAdvantage miles? If so, how many are required?

If your fare basis is Y, Y2 or YX2 then yes it is possible for 25000 miles. See:

http://www.aa.com/apps/AAdvantage/Vi...artnerType=Air

otherwise, no. If it is in YBHKLMS sub-classes then you could upgrade using 60000 AsiaMiles, which isn't as bad value as it looks since a full fare upgradeable on AA miles will cost around US$2500 whereas you can get fares upgradeable for AsiaMiles from about US$800.

I am flying NRT/HKG on CX in a week or so. I am Y class. What would it take to upgrade to J? I have AA miles.

AA miles may be used for transpacific on CX, I think. NRT-HKG can be upgraded with AsiaMiles points. If your fare basis is Y (not the booking class), then you can also pay the difference between Y and J. Pick the second last flight of the day out of NRT. It's usually an equipment with the new J!
