Typhoon Haima and CX operations
I am looking at a connection in HKG FR, 21 Oct. Can there flight disruptions be expected? Is there any CX travel advisory in effect?
UA among others prepares for it: https://www.united.com/CMS/en-US/tra...eptionPolicies |
Hi,
This advisory is on the Cathay pacific UK site http://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_G...oon-haima.html Regards TBS |
If like last time (as if it's reasonably sure that the typhoon will hit HK), they'll suspend all operations after a certain hour...

I've got a flight tomorrow (20 Oct) to HKG booked in F using AA miles. Does anyone have insight/experience to share about how CX would handle an F award? Would they put me on a partner (in J/F) or only give me the next J/F award seat on their metal? Thanks for any advice/input.

Haima has just entered South China Sea, so they can get better forecasts now. Late season typhoons are harder to forecast, although it is no longer a super typhoon, and the area has lower heat content so it will most likely reduce in intensity. It is also landing to the east of Hong Kong, and based on past experiences, such tyhpoons won't cause significant disruptions for a long period of time. Also note that the airport is to the west of the city. From the latest forecast, I think there will only be disruptions for a few hours on Friday early evening, but obviously, no guarantees on that.

For the past 2 hours my secretary and I have both tried to call the Global Rez line and MPO DM line (many many times) to rebook some of my flights for this weekend and next. We didn't even get the 'Line is busy' msg, instead we just got the line cut-off right after we dialled in.
I know this is the time (T-1 before typhoon hits town) when many pax are calling to rebook their flights just like me and the hotlines are busy, but surely CX could upgrade their calling system?? Most other airlines they would have you wait and listen to music (and actually tells you they are experiencing high volume of calls blah blah blah, please be patient!). That way at least you know you're in the queue and your call will be answered. As my tickets cannot be changed online because I bought it via the Global Rez line (and not purchased on CX website) there is only one way I can change my booking and that is to call. And the only way seems to be mission impossible as of now. This is just pathetic! Am I the only one experiencing this right now? |

Have somebody at a TPAC night flight (J award) from the WestCoast tonight into HKG. Did go to the airport at noon and got connecting flight to SE Asia rebooked onto an earlier 9h30 departure. Original flight was to arrive in HKG FR at 7h00 and connecting flight to leave at 19h00. Great proactive rebooking by airport Service Director. ^
Meanwhile, latest info from check-in agent stateside about two hours ago is, that Typhoon is expected to hit FR at ~ 11h00 a.m. Checking flight status it looks like flight cancellations begin at around that time for most of the day going forward. |
Was able to dial through DM line twice no hangups.
Bit longer wait than usual though |
Winds are beginning to pick up, and looks like it could be quite a close hit. I'd be surprised if there weren't a lot of CX/KA outbound cancellations tomorrow.

My flight looks alright at the moment.
My ticket was issued by an OTA. In case of a cancellation, do I need to contact the OTA for a change or CX is able to help directly in such situation? |
I'm on 807 ORD-HKG Saturday afternoon. The incoming 806 leaves HKG Saturday midday. Hopefully things will have blown over by then? The forecasts suggest the weather improves starting Friday midnight or so.

Booked an AA J award ticket from PVG-HKG-YVR on Oct 21. The first segment seems to be okay, but the second segment (CX838) is cancelled per Cathay's flight status.
I am still on hold with Cathay in the hope to re-book. But wondering if I should call AA to arrange alternate flights? In both cases, if the award inventory is sold out, will they re-book me to other revenue class, as long as there is a seat available?? |
CX is pretty good at this sort of stuff - we have flight disruptions like this several times a year. Basically they will, of course, fill up all subsequent flights to destinations that have suffered cancellations until the backlog is cleared. The only question is the priority order in which they do it. A CX Diamond member on revenue ticket will get on the first plane out. Someone with no status in oneworld on an award ticket from another FF programme will be at the end of the queue. But no plane will go out with empty seats whilst you are still waiting.

rough DP: currently on an AA award from MCI-> ORD-> HKG with the second leg on CX 807 today. flight was cancelled and staff at check-in estimated a 90 percent chance the plane goes tomorrow.
