They usually put passengers on their own metals, but not always. If you don't like their arrangement, you can ask for other choices. It is uncertain if they will entertain your suggestion though. Note that if they cannot find something of your preference, they may try to settle other passengers before getting back to you.

A check on FR24 at this moment shows no flights around HKIA.
All flights cancelled according to HKIA website.

Seems like everything is back to normal now, although air traffic in and out of HKIA are more congested than usual as flights return to operations.

Flew HKG-HND Thursday 20 in the morning, flew back HND-HKG on the afternoon flight on the 22nd. No issues whatsoever. Only thing is that HKG was a madhouse on arrival, not surprised as they had a full day's backlog of passengers to process.
