No, you are not correct in thinking this! I can hear you wanting to believe it, but saying it doesn't make it happen;). Did you see jagmeets' response? Basically, your question here contradicts his sound advice (IMO) to you.

The system isn't very advanced, or they intentionally make it ghetto. Either way, there is absolutely the chance CX posts your KUL-HKG and HKG-SFO sectors post at the identical time, and your HKG-SFO miles are "lost" towards elite renewal just like jagmeets says. It's annoying I know.

...

Given the not-so-advance system, did any brother/sister have the following experience before?

I'm currently a GO at 74 sectors and if everything goes right I'll fly my 80th sector on late 30 Aug, which is the last month of my current membership year. If the system post my 80th flight on 1 Sep, will they just renew my GO instead of moving me to DM? Should I email them in advance to extend my membership year?

tier upgrade at checkin

No downside to dropping them a note. It'll probably end all ok, but incase there's an issue MPC can manually upgrade your tier..

Welcome to DM land!

Ah, yes. I neglected to re-check jagmeets' post when posting my follow up. :D

I will probably just keep my MPC number on there in hope of either an instant miles upgrade at the airport today (I need the miles to redeem it and there may be higher chance of clearing with the status) or an op-up. Thanks all for the advice.

You could still keep the SL status for better chance of upgrading and ask the ground staff to remove the MPO no after your BP being checked and reclaim the missed miles after reaching GO.

An update: just logged in and saw that I had been upgraded to GO and only my KUL-HKG miles have posted. HKG-SFO miles not posted yet, but perhaps CX could have missed them, as I did an instant upgrade PE -> J at the gate?

Thanks for all your help!

nice, well done. congrats.

Wait and see with the HKG-SFO miles.

Sometimes when you do Instant Upgrade, or one-class mileage upgrade in advance, there is a glitch in the CX system where you have to call to claim your miles. If they don't post in a few days that's what's going on. Never had a problem, but it's a waste of time...especially since some of the MPC agents don't get it done and you have to call back.

and, thanks for reporting back!

QRC3288's advise is sound - the problem has been reported on here before.

This happened to me (on renewal i appeared to be 1200 miles short) and they just renewed at the higher level.
In fact I would have gone through it once the miles had credited. Instead those miles have gone to the new membership year.

Final update: HKG-SFO miles posted (one day later than KUL-HKG, which makes sense given that it was technically flown a day later at 00:30) without having to call. So I am now 7.5k miles closer to GO renewal :D

Anyways, kudos to CX for everything crediting the way I wanted!
