Baggage Allowance for a stopover
Hi, I'm planning on flying out of Chicago to Hong Kong and stop in Hong Kong for a week before flying to Japan for a exchange program and was confused about the baggage allowance for the Hong Kong to Japan flight. Does the 2 pieces at 50lbs each allowance from the first leg of the trip still apply? Or does it not apply since my stopover is a week long? I called twice asking Cathay Pacific but they gave contradicting responses. One said it no longer applies because my stopover is over 24 hours, while the other said that it still applies as long as it's all on one ticket. I also asked my travel agent and she said the same thing as the 2nd person. I'm really confused now and was hoping someone could clarify this for me. Thanks!

Hey I had similar situation, they are correct when they say first part is OK for 2 PC but if you try to check in at Hong Kong they will tell you one bag only as you did not connect through to Japan.

Baggage Allowance for a stopover
Is this on one ticket? And what does your eticket say for the allowance on the second leg?

This is something I wanted to ask as well. My wife has a recent trip YVR-HKG-SIN-HKG-YVR on one ticket, staying in HKG after the first leg for more than a week, then to SIN and back and each stop staying a few days. I always thought for a trip originating from North America, baggage allowance will be 2 pieces throughout the trip. But her ticket shows 2PC for the long haul segments and 30K for HKG-SIN-HKG.
Is it something to do with the stopover not treated as a connection any more and what exactly is the rule? |

It's supposed to be the piece system for the entire ticket. Problem is that cx are having rubbish agents picking up the phone these days and keep giving wrong info. |
I was refused two free bags in HKG when I did this, they told me it was the rules say no connection 24 hrs you go to 1 bag.

Seems like uve had a bad agent. When 1 leg of the entire ticket touches the Americas, the entire ticket turns turns to the piece system. You could have stood by and forced it into 2pcs. |

Btw, refer to this thread. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cathay-pacific-asia-miles/1291691-baggage-allowance.html Download the relevant documents in case you need to challenge the agents |
My ticket was from USA to HKG then on to Japan about ten days later.

I believe you should be entitled n u got some bad staff that needed some fight |
Agree with Kaka
The piece system should apply. I got a round the world ticket touching US having every segment having an allowance of 2 piece. But better refer to the e-ticket, it is a bit strange that the e-ticket shows 30kg instead. |

Eticket only shows it leg by leg but piece system works when tocket touches the americas |
I think you will find because I stopped in HKG more than a day and I checked in again for the next sector some days later the baggage allowance switches to the route I was flying which was Japan and that was only one PC of baggage. For me it s not a big problem and the staff were very friendly about the whole thing. They just got a huge Cathay Pacific box and put my two bags inside it and taped it up to become one.

But I checked the rule on the web site again and no mention of the 24-hour limit as long as the trip touches America. I guess as Kaka said, better have the rules handy if under this situation. |
Baggage Allowance for a stopover
US DOT requires the allowance given for ORD-HKG to apply to all segments in this itinerary regardless of stopover.

You *should* have 2PC all the way through, but be prepared to fight with the reservation agent if the TKT is not right. If the TKT is right, then just show it to check-in agent and it should solve the problem. If the TKT is not right, make sure you fight for it before dep with reservation. While it should be 2PC, and my GDS is correctly displaying it, for some reason I've had the experience that CX's own Amadeus system is messing up with bag allowance with US itineraries.
The clause you should look at is at http://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_U...r-journey.html The US DOT defines international journeys to/from the US as travel that contains more than one country (international travel) with the origin, destination or furthest checked point being in the US. Exceptions imposed by the Department of Transportation of the US Government will be in place. ... 1.For journeys to/from the US, the rules of the first marketing carrier on the journey apply, provided that the first marketing carrier is specified on ATPCO’s (Airline Tariff Publishing Company) published list of US DOT Carriers (defined as carriers where general rules tariffs to/from the US have been filed). ... 3.Once the first marketing carrier is identified (through steps 1 and 2 above), it is the first marketing carrier’s policy to opt for the rules of the Most Significant marketing Carrier (MSC) for the journey or retain the first marketing carrier’s own baggage policy. (Cathay Pacific opts for the rules of the MSC.) ... 2.The whole journey should be taken into account when determining the MSC even if the traveller checks out their baggage at one point during the journey.
