Changing Award Ticket Date

Hello FTers,

I would like to change my award redemption date (dates only, same routing) and found the below info.

5. Can I change my dates of travel after my flight award has been issued? If so, how?

Yes, you can change your travel dates for a fee of USD25 or 1,000 mileage credits, subject to award seat availability. Please contact us prior to your original departure date. You can send us your request by phone, email, fax or via the online feedback form.

How does the "subject to award seat availability" work exactly? Will I be waitlisted again or will I be rejected for the change immediately on the phone with MPO or?

Any advice would help. Thank you :D.

Say you have a confirmed upgrade from Y-J, and you want to change dates. There has to be J availability too on the day you want before your date change is successful, otherwise you would have to be placed onto the waitlist again with your underlying Y ticket.

Now I am not sure if whether the USD25 date change fee is only required for full redemptions, or if it applies to upgrades too, since it technically is still a revenue ticket as you payed for your underlying itinerary with cash, and changing the date of THAT does NOT require an additional fee. Does anyone have an answer here?

I'm pretty certain any kind of award ticket involving miles will be charged a change fee

jona970318 is right. On top of that, even revenue tickets will be charged a change fee if you do a change.

Thank you, GE90-115B for your reply. But let me be more specific.

If you bought a REVENUE ticket and you want to change your dates, you can do this with a fee and if space is available you will automatically be booked and confirmed for your change.

If you bought an AWARD ticket (confirmed and issued) and you want to change the dates, and space is available for the dates you want to change it to, will they book and confirm it right away, or will they WAITLIST you still? Because this is what they do to all award bookings, just in case CX is still able to sell these seats at revenue.

Do you get what I mean?

If there is available award space on the date you want, I don't see why they should still wait list you.

Btw I think I have a valid argument here on the date change fee for full redemptions vs upgrades. While it may or may not work, I think its still worth the shot to try and argue with the call center, some newbie operator may not know the rules too well which gives you a chance to bend them to your favor :D

Thanks! :)

So I am confirmed for my flight so they are now confirmed for a date. I wanted to change both legs to Feb 1-Feb 24. On these dates I am wait listed for both legs.

If I issue my original dates (since they are confirmed) can I simply change the dates for $100 or 4000AM (4 sectors) and they will be immediately confirmed? Or will I be wait listed? Since I have a waitlisted reservation on these exact flights.

Please advise...

I just changed an award ticket date last week and it was a US 25.00 change fee or 1000 miles

You need availability on the new dates before you can get them confirmed as award, that's all I can say...

So you confirm what you have now.

When your upgrade waitlist clears you reticket.

You have to pay price difference on underlying fare, if any.

Plus 1,000AM/US$25.

I believe this is per segment. So if are changing both segments, you will need to pay this twice.

Hi percysmith, I'm not wait listing for an upgrade but a full redemption. Same routing just different dates. Does this change your approach recommendation?

Yes per sector so with my itinerary with a transit in HKG that means 4 sectors ($100/4000AM).

Full Redemption or Upgrade?

This was full award not upgrade
I do think it is 25.00 per sector

GE90-115B Jan 20, 2014 10:05 am

It's stupid. Technically you could waive the fee for yourself by pretending that you aren't going onto the trip anymore, and cancel/terminate the award immediately. Then rebook/redeem all over again onto the dates you want to change to. This should work for both upgrades and full redemptions, but you need flexibility of course and won't work if it's urgent (i.e. you need it within a week).
