I'd imagine a bit bumpy :o

And probably the Ngong Ping 360 tram not operating either...

Bumpy I can live with. I am confident if there is a risk they will not take a chance.

Now a question, from PEK to HKG I am on a C award and HKG to SIN (3.20pm) on an F award. Would CX rebook me to avoid HKG? I guess it makes sense to have 2 pax avoiding HKG and ease the issues there. Who do I contact or just ask PEK check in tomorrow?

Update, booked with BA avios, just got a notifly message for the pek hkg flight that the hkg airport will cease operations at 6pm and that passengers with connections should contact their travel agent and not come to the airport. BAEC is closed tho.

Maybe worthwhile going to the airport earlier and get and earlier flight? Spend more time in the nice spa at BkK

I am so glad that I flown off HKG today instead of tomorrow so I can get back in time to work on Monday morning.

I am scheduled to take CX845 JFK-HKG on Monday, 24 Sep at 01:30AM. As of now, no cancellation yet, but will there be an aircraft at JFK on Sunday night to take me to HKG?

Is it CX 846 HKG-JFK that usually returns as CX845 to HKG? I see that CX846 on 22 Sep is cancelled, which means my flight may be cancelled?

Tried to call CX, the hotel gave me some wireless phone that ran out of battery 25 minutes into the hold. Now just trying to call them again and in the queue. BA could not do anything, CX currently only shows the message I previously posted, also other website for the PEK-HKG flight. The HKG-SIN flight does not show anything so in theory there should not be an issue.

Lets see. Will post again after I spoke to CX.

Yes if CX846 is cancelled, then CX845 will also be cancelled, but CX may decide to leave a plane(s) in JFK ahead of the typhoon, particularly as flights leaving today will not be able to return to HKG, so in fact once operations re-start it could be like skipping a day, and in fact all JFK aircraft are still in position to operate from JFK on Monday.

CX828 Sep 21, 2013 8:01 am

I am glad CX is preparing for this in advance. Summer of 2012 was hit by big disruption when we had that big typhoon, and CX were not prepared enough and it was chaos in HKG.

It is very likely that the airport will be functional during some parts of the CX suspended operation, but CX as a based carrier must make a decision so that it's very large majority of passengers do not turn up at the airport expecting to fly on cancelled flights and so that transit passengers are not accepted at outports and get stranded in HKG. It also means CX will be in a better place to recover once the storm passes, as it will have crew and aircraft in position both in HKG and outports.

Interestingly CX254/CX238 are cancelled from LHR tonight. They are scheduled to arrive at 17:15, before the operation is suspended, I guess CX presume landing may already be difficult at that time, or they want those aircraft/crews positioned in LHR to recover after the storm passes.

After spending 1 hour and 20 minutes in the queue the line was just (11.08pm) disconnected with a message the (Beining) office is now closed. Calling HK from my hotel will be massively expensive.

I will ignore their message and go to the airport tomorrow. Both flights seem to be operating but I would not mind to be rerouted on SQ even though that means me arriving 4 hours after the F1 finishes.

Looking at CNN on the typhoon it does not look pretty...

FWIW.....
I actually talked to a friend today who is a CX pilot and he told me was the strategy to get a few planes and crews positioned in the US to start flying some/most ex US flights on the 22nd and 23rd then operate a full schedule on the 24th. I am an interested watcher as I will be flying out of the US on the 24th.

Again, not official from CX but I would put a lot of credibility in the pilots since they have to operate in this environment.

deadinabsentia Sep 21, 2013 9:40 am

Strategy is to keep atleast 2/3 of KA/CX fleet out of HKG, at ports or ferried to aid in the Monday PM/Tuesday Am recovery.

I guess there will a few CX (besides the normal KA) planes in KHH tomarrow, it will interesting to see if any other airlines stop in KHH/TPE?

That's what my pilot friend mentioned. They are also targeting a noon time on 23rd to resume operations and be at full strength the 24th. That again, is not official....YMMV...

Do you have a link to track in more time intervals? I have been using weather.com.ph but they update every 6 hours or so.

With CX845 JFK to HKG on 22 Sep cancelled, looks like CX846 on 21 Sep will operate HKG to JFK and remain at JFK until CX845 on the 23 Sep.

I really hope that will be the case and HKG will be operational by Monday evening.

Just checked in at hkia it's kind of mob scene, especially considering it's low season.

5 level depth check in line at normal Y and I have to wait for 10 minutes before I can drop my baggage, and that was 07:30....

Checked in at PEK this morning for my flights PEK-HKG-SIN. I would have thought CX would want to avoid people transiting in HKG today but no.

Getting ready for a bumpy ride. Never flew into a typhoon before..

that TG flight will be turn around flight from BKK which I believe depart 8am. check if the flight depart bkk on time.

Many time airport staff will only know very last minute. I was on DPS-CGK flight on KLM some time ago (can see the report on my blog :)) by noon, I notice that the AMS-SIN flight will be arriving SIN like 2+ hours late. Hence SIN-DPS will also delay.

But DPS still say the flight is on time. Call KLM office in CGK also said they delay info. I have to tweet KLM in AMS to cinfirm that the flight will be delay by 2 hours!! I rather spend my time somewhere else rather in waiting in DPS!!

In Jakarta now, my flight CX 776 cancelled. Now trying to find if there are any space for tomorrow's flight.

Looks like the storm is slowing down so that the effect will extend more and more into Monday. Not looking good for my 12:30 pm flight from MNL-HKG and onward connection to Dubai tomorrow.

And you might want to make it early Sunday morning. Latest JTWC (US) forecasts for 70% chance of >34 knots winds by 2pm (local time) on Sun.
http://www.tropicalstormrisk.com/tra...c/201317W.html

It doesn't have wind direction or gusts predictions, but IMHO, with the storm's forecasted location, expect gusty north westlies - plenty of crosswind "fun" there.

Called CX yesterday, and rerouted from KHH-HKG onto a TPE-HKG this morning. Flight was a little bumpy - crew managed to get drinks run and starter/dessert trays out in J before having to abandon the meal service. But they did do a champagne run after the all clear was given!

No luck trying to contact CX HKG or JKT reservations. Just submitted a rebooking request form. Will try the JKT CX office tomorrow morning when they open again. Meanwhile, still trying CX HKG. :(
Economy / business, don't matter to me. Just want to get back as fast as possible.

CX just confirmed me for tomorrow CX718 depart at 0820hrs via email.
Originally in Y on V class, rebooked in same.
Did not even go to the airport as I found out my flight was cancelled via text message early this morning 6am. I logged into the website, manage bookings, recalled my original booking, and clicked the rebooking submission form.
Now, have another day to enjoy Jakarta. :)

Finally an improvement due to the system upgrades.
