Perhaps a solution to the problem of other pax complaining that they aren't getting water bottles would be to place the bottles in the seatback pockets of eligible pax (DM/GO) prior to boarding?

1. Others might swipe...

2. Will not stop them from demanding/complaining unless they see the rules (that is why it is a good idea to have them printed and laminated!)

3. I personally always refuse the bottles, so placing them for everyone leads to waste.

Correct.

In fact, last time I flew CX to SYD on CX101, my flight and some CX flights to US were parked at the end gates (67-70), and a centralised screening point was set up for those flights.

Is centralising LAG search at the end gates the norm these days?

I don't remember whether my recollection is incorrect, but I remember on the first -->Aus flights with the LAG rule, bottled water was provided to each and every passenger, pre-included in the seat pocket. They disappeared the next time I went.

If CX wants more premium pax like my parents and less non-BIS miles-flyer no-loyalty customers like me they really should give a serious thought about the bottled water. Think my parents did complain when the water was pulled on the next Aus flight.

You can choose not to open the bottle.

I don't see it that much as waste cos CX is trying to cut back on crew members...certainly fewer requests for cup of water will be a saving.

Esp for US/AU flights where even FTers can't carry their own lounge water.

Kekeke...just had a thought cross my mind. CX can find a supplier even cheaper than Bonaqua - possibly the same Mainland factory who does Sands Macau water that punters get on arrival - and make their own Sands water. They can customise the bottle label like Sands "Marco Polo Diamond Pax only" to highlight how prestigious you are (for good measure add '馬可孛羅會鑽石卡會員專用/马可孛罗会钻石卡会员专用" in size 48 font)

I agree that there will not be wastage if they do not throw away unopened bottles. Wonder if they do that? I suppose there is the additional risk that it may not be readilly obvious (to some) whether a bottle has been opened but not consumed.

Aside - I have had the unpleasant experience of having breakfast at top hotels including the Mandarin Oriental when jam bottles had been opened AND contents mostly gone!

It's pretty easy to tell FAs to check seals.

But I like my Sands water solution better now.

Not practical at all.

Airplanes are not hotel rooms where housekeepers have time to cater for individual requests. How would it be possible to place certain items in specific seats within the tight turnaround time?

And seat assignments are not finalised until maybe 15 to 20 minutes before departure.

I don't understand the fuss about bottled water in Y anyway. I'll just go to the trolley set up near the galley and help myself.

I thought u r quite premium?:D

Actually the main cost of the water is the weight. Imagine 200+ bottles each flight!

Also it is extremely important the give the bottle water to DMs as they only offer tap water which taste like crap for y class or the small cuplet which also taste bad.
If people start to harass the FA on giving out the bottle water to DMs I will encourage people To do a DYKWIA. At least it makes the life of the FA easier and wont be bully by those other Y pax

Anecdotally, I know this water bottle issue comes up all the time on CX. I've been told by a few FAs that it is one of the most common issues on board - pax seated near DMs (oftentimes it is GOs and SLs who were not offered water) get angry because they didn't get one. The usual strategy by the FAs is just to lie and say they ran out of water bottles. It sounds like as policy, DMs are supposed to be greeted and get water on long-haul flights. It is up to the discretion of the ISM and managers whether or not to do this for GOs or lower. I suspect the inconsistency probably doesn't help CX.

On 2 of my flights in Y, the FA discreetly gave me the bottled water in a plastic bag. That seems to work.... unless one decides to present the bottled water ala the Lion King :D

Or may be CX can spend a few more cents to pack that in a gift box so people around would understand that's a perk for premium guests. A win win solution ^

I was returning from China on KA (Y class) and the section FA gave me a water bottle, presumably because I'm DM. Two Taiwanese pax across the aisle called the FA back, complained in Mandarin about me only being offered water, and implied it was because I am Caucasian and everyone else in our section was not. They keep going on and on and the FA - some young HK girl - apologized a lot in HK-accented Mandarin (which seemed to make them even more agitated), explained I was an elite, and got the ISM. The ISM came over and apologized some more and brought them water. Very, very awkward even thinking about it. They didn't bother saying anything to me in English, I assume they figured I didn't understand what they were complaining about, of which I understood every word. Then they asked for comment cards, where they complained about bad service (I found this out because they handed the card to the young FA unsealed, and she read it before submitting it. We talked in the galley and I wrote her a positive comment card, hoping it would negate their completely baseless complaints).

I talked to the ISM later, she said they were non-status pax. I guess they were very sensitive to this issue but they got it completely wrong. One of the most awkward moments I have ever encountered.

Anecdotally, I know this water bottle issue comes up all the time on CX. Not nearly so extreme or troublesome as your situation, but one of the only times I've been offered water (as a GO) also led to resentment on the part of nearby pax. We hadn't pushed back from the gate yet on a HKG-ORD flight and the FA came around distributing water bottles to other elites, something I really appreciate on flights to the U.S. and wish they would do more consistently. But a pax across the aisle from me in Y (caucasian, as am I), saw it and also asked for a bottle. He seemed irritated when all he got was a cup. At least he didn't raise a big stink about it.

Unfortunately I don't think CX can win this one either way. As silly as it sounds, these little customer-recognition things do help build loyalty, and encourage me to fly CX over other carriers where I don't have status and wouldn't feel as well looked-after. So it would be a problem for them to pull back on the unpublished perks.

But other pax will always misinterpret it. Part of the problem is that everyone expects total equality, which isn't reasonable or realistic. In my early flying days before I had learned about status, FF programs and so on, whenever I saw other pax getting special treatment in flight I assumed there was probably a reason for it -- like service recovery -- and didn't get bent out of shape if I didn't get the same treatment.

In your case, I'd hope someone at CX is capable of "reading between the lines" on those complaints to understand why the FA did what she did and not hold it against her that some people didn't get it.

Or a plastic bag container. No matter what, it should be marked clearly this is a premium pax's prestigious benefit, the gaudier the better. Simplified Chinese ideal for labelling language. Consider it partial consolation for selling DM/GOs to Amex.

With non-personal FF programs delivered in cramped spaces, isn't the more ostentatious the better? Reminds me of these lines from Up In The Air:

Business Woman: He just waltzes in and cuts in line?
Hilton Clerk: We reserve priority assistance for our Hilton Honors members.
Ryan Bingham: [hands the business woman the packet] The promotions are great. You should check it out.
[the woman snatches the packet from Ryan in anger; Ryan laughs]
