JAL Influence

Just read the news from Bloomberg:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...EmUIv4tI&pos=2

Does anyone take JAL flights? I am just wondering how members on this board, CX and oneworld would get affected in the near future.

Quite a lot of threads about the issue, basically on every oneworld-related forum section (especially the JL and OW forums). CX is likely to benefit if this happens as AA will be forced to cooperate with CX by flying its own metal into HKG and further codeshares (if MU also does not join OW with CX being the only Asian member).

As the presently only OW carrier, doing F on NRT-HKG, although not daily, it's a blow to all OW travellers, not only loosing F availability, but also the NRT JL F Lounge

Hopefully, another Japanese airline will join OW if JAL opts out. ANA would be a good catch.

And ANA would be leaving what is becoming a pretty strong Star Alliance because...

I'm based in the US and I use a combo of CX/JAL when traveling within Asia. Although I always prefer CX when flying to/from NRT/TPE/HKG, I will have no choice but to use CX and there will be fewer flights to choose from. I will also miss the first class JAL lounge. The real problem for me is being able to use NRT as a connecting point on JAL to other destinations in China such as PEK and PVG.

JAL has daily F NRT-HKG service on JL731/732.

This leaves OW light in Asia IMHO.

Of all the unattached carriers out there in Asia I would vote for MH. I hope OW get busy and start signing some of these guys up - with or without F service.

Japan Airlines to file for bankruptcy protection

Choice quote: "JAL shares fell to an all-time low on Monday, valuing the firm at just $150m - roughly the price of a new jumbo jet."

To be honest, as a HK-er it has virtually no impact for me for JL leaving, except I will lost my free domestic sector for my next award booking (I can replace it with ANA Visit Japan pass/ Japan Rail Pass) . The one having serious pain is AA / BA

I would be interested if CX will try grabbing CA to join OW consider their cross share holding and joint venture routes. I don't see much chance of CX jumping ship to *A though with the presence of SQ

Or you can use JAL Visit Japan pass, 26,000 yen plus tax for 2 domestic sectors.

It can also be the other way round. CA grabbing CX to join *A, SQ jumps to ST. And it will be the end of OW...

I would love it if CX would jump to *A. But that's just in my fantasyland.

Oh, that is the least I would want to see. You will have to be GO to get in the lounge.

As of this week you're right. Puzzling up a AONE4 recently, I found 5 out of 7 days availability in mid-January.

It has daily scheduled F service available on JL731/732 flights for years...zero availability for AONE4 doesn't mean it doesn't have F service ;)
