Not because of a bday...if he gets UG will be a standard op-up.

The current birthday upgrade is prerequisite that YOU HAVE TO FLY ON YOUR BIRTHDAY. My suggestion is that no matter what Cathay will give you that birthday gift to use at your leisure.

Now, tell me which is more practical? Adjusting your flying schedule so you can fly on your birthday (and misses the chance to celebrate the big day with the people that loves you, and it's all because you wanted an upgrade? Really?), or, get a certificate to use anytime you wish?

IMO, its a bad (terrible) idea from the airlines perspective as well as the frequent travelers'.

EVERYONE has a bday (at least I think they do), so what you're proposing is that EVERYONE gets one UG cert.... That will make it IMPOSSIBLE to use, since everyone will be trying to use theirs..you essentially devalue the bday upgrade.

Even if you limited this to DM's only..do you know how many you're talking about?

If its important to you to get a free UG then you need to go to the trouble of booking travel on your bday...

No.

I have only ever heard of birthday upgrades on flights actually on the birthday.

When exactly does a travel companion of a member get upgraded on the member's birthday?

I flew HKG-LHR on my birthday last month in Y and both me and my companion got upgraded straight to J - no question asked. That's rather strange given that she was on a different ticket and not on my redemption list (so there's no way CX would know she's travelling with me). Did the agent manually upgrade her at the counter?

Then she was just lucky if there really was zero connection to you.

However, if you checked in together, they will upgrade her manually as well, regardless of redemption group or ticket. And if you're traveling with two buddies, they'll let you pick your favorite ;)

Yes, almost certainly.

There's probably a service you could sell there if travelling solo on your birthday!

Or milestone or other upgrades.

Not sure if this has been asked before: Does it matter who the lead pax is in the booking, or who paid for the ticket?

I (MCP GO) will be travelling with Mrs NJG (MCP GR) on my birthday SIN-BKK in Y (V class), so I am wondering whether I accidentally diminished my chances of getting the birthday upgrade by letting her book our tickets?

It won't matter who or how you paid for your ticket.

Got the golden tickets to J at the check-in desk, for both me and my wife. It did not stop there: Several crew members wished me a Happy Birthday, they were very friendly and chirpy throughout the flight and I even got a card with a little note from every crew member in J... They certainly managed to make me feel special! Very happy bunny now! :D^

My experience was the opposite, not really expecting an upgrade since I was already in J and the flight was on an A350. Ground staff nor cabin crew knew about my birthday. ISM realized on the last minute, made a mad dash to the galley with a box of chocolates and a card...a few minutes later she presented the said box of Peninsula Chocolate and signed card right just before the captain asked them to sit down for landing.

Anyone tried flying the day *after* your birthday?

Will my chances increase if I go straight to the airport after my birthday party tonight?

Your flight has to be on your birthday.

I think too many people think this birthday upgrade is due to them. This is just something that might happen. If you get it is nice, if you don't, so it be.

My personal experience, three years ago flew HKG-BKK on my wife's birthday, we both got upgraded from Y to C. Last year flew again on my wife's birthday NRT-HKG, nothing.
