Changes to "New" J seats

I was travelling SYD-HKG this weekend and walked through the J cabin on the A330 (33B). I noticed that the seats had been recovered with a much more pleasing fabric. It was smoother, and not made of that plasticky fake velvet. I'm sure it would mean that your clothes don't get stuck on the fabric as you try to slide around on it, and probably be less hot as well. The old fabric was terrible to look at, feel and made you feel so hot. And it looked old even on new aircraft.

Unfortunately I wasn't sitting in J this time so wasn't able to see if there were any other changes to the seat.

Ah..okay..it's not just me who noticed it. I was in J LAX-HKG (77A) in September and noticed the change in materials as well. I've asked one of pursers whether it's the case. She said it's the new J "seats" (and she looked at me like I have never seen CX new J seats :-P ) and was not aware of such change in the materials....

I agree with you that the new materials is much nicer and IMHO is much more comfortable.

I noticed it on this picture here, but only on the ottomans. It left me wondering whether the seats had been recovered as well, but you guys have just proved that :) They seem to be all blue too.

But sadly it's still the coffin style J seats :td: I'm not a fan

Hopefully with the less grippy fabric the bed surrounds won't fall apRt when reclining and unreclining. Those thngs are only held by Velcro.

It's acutally not all blue like the photo. There are some green weaved in the fabric as well though more subtle than the previous one which makes in nicer. The photo looks VERY nice though....

Plus the headphone socket on the newer seats can now swallow the adaptor of my bose QC3! ^^

So I managed to fly in these refurbished seats. Some other changes I noticed:

- the headrest can now tilt forward and back
- the seat pad is slightly narrower so that it gives easier access to the magazine storage.
- the seat seems to be fixed so that it doesn't seem to be always tilting away from the from of the plane as if someone too heavy sat on it.
- the new fabric is definitely better. Easier to move around on, and doesn't feel too hot when sleeping.

I just flew back on a A33B and the J seats had the bad/old fabric. But the headrests could tilt back and forward. I'm certain there are some seats out there where the headrest can't tilt. I might be wrong though.

This was a refurbished A330 - had the old flight maps on the IFE.

Having travelled on the "new" J seat last week on 77A, I will agree that the fabric is much better than the previous ones. It gives the seat a more sturdy feel. It actually feels flatter also.

Hopefully, the new fabric is already installed in every 77A and 33B.

any idea if they are going to install movable dividers.

Just traveled on the "new" J with new fabric. Definitely better than the old fabric in terms of comfort, but I was on KPH, and the fabric was already looking worn out. I don't know how long the specific plane's been using this fabric, but i'm guessing at max for a year. I can't imagine how it'll be another year or two down the road...

And another thing: is it just me or does it feel like the seat has gotten wider? I feel like when i'm sitting in it, I now have ample space on each side of my bum to shift left and right, whereas I just felt cramped before...

I don't think it is wider, but it definitely feels wider. I think they might have made the seat cushion more robust so it doesn't lean to one side pushing you against the divider hence making it feel like you were falling over.

I think the actual cushion is a little narrower to give easier access to the magazine holder.

Is it me or the color has been changed to a slight grey-ish?

JHIN Jan 10, 2010 10:18 pm

I would not, could not, sit in CX coffins.
I could not, would not, with a drink.
I will not sit in them with a mate.
I will not sit in them on any plane.
I will not sit in them here or there.
I will not sit in CX J anywhere.
I do not eat fly CX J green seats or gray.
I do not like them, Sam-I-am.

In 2007 I tried them once moved on to BA in J now for good!

But ask me about CX F - Loving IT ^

To my eye it looked greyish, and i did not notice the green weave as you mentioned previously... but then again maybe i'm just getting old here :D

Another change to the J seat that seems to have occurred recently: the satiny headrest condom has gone. It has been replaced by a white pillow that is velcro'd to the top of the seat, and actually provides head support. It is much better, and more attractive, and more supportive, though you might find it a little high in the bed position. I actually didn't use the pillow as the head rest was enough height for me.

LOL :)

But yes, I noticed that too last month when I flew HKG-YYZ on a 77A that there was a pillow there. I don't fly long haul J on CX very frequently so I did not realise what the change was, but it did strike me as being different and more comfortable even though I couldn't put a finger on it.

Glad to hear CX is trying to improve the J product. Frankly, I have always thought it is a far cry from SQ's outstanding J seats.

Agree, I love CX, but sometime it is just hard to compare just from the "feeling of space" in your seat!

Since there is so much controversy on the CX seats - on both sides - some people love it and some hate it - why doesn't CX wisen up and make the central part of the cabin BA style and the window side the herringbone private cabins. That way those with families or couples can sit in the middle and individual travellers can sit on the side.

Better yet would be to compartmentalize it somehow so if there are kids that would be the only cabin they are allowed in... maybe lower deck only on 747 and perhaps front J cabin in 77A or something like that... any thoughts?

i love the BA CW set up for travel with another or family. in fact, i think its the best out there...

...i would love the idea of having the upper deck be allocated for persons with familes...or at least give notice to those up there they can expect a child or two....

in fact, we are flying in the front J cabin with our 3 year old knowing there are fewer people there in case she looses it....so far, there are no others going YYZ-HKG...
