What to do: long layover in YYZ

We have a long-ish (around five hours) layover in YYZ enroute to DUB from YQR coming up. We are usually through the airport fairly quickly and stay airside so don't ever explore the airport and immediate area (except for the short walk from international arrivals to domestic security). I cannot stomach another meal from any of the T1 airside eateries!

I was thinking initially of renting a car and heading out for a quick meal somewhere just to get off the property, but I think now I would prefer to just stay close by. Are there any outside seating areas anywhere near either of the terminals that would be worth going over to for a sitdown (we were thinking of maybe packing a little meal and enjoy sitting outside for a bit)? Otherwise, are there any hotels with reasonably decent restaurants in them that we could walk to or get to easily whilst trailing our carry-on rollaboards? A thousand years ago when T3 was still new I used to eat in the Sheraton from time to time but I would prefer to get out and get some air.

Thanks.

I don't think there's any hotel other than Sheraton that's within walking distance (unless you want to walk for 1/2 hr), but I think almost every hotel has a free shuttle, perhaps you can utilize that? :)

I have never eaten at any hotels, so I'll leave this part to other FTers. But if you want to go out, Mississauga square one has quite a few restaurants.

How far a drive would that be?

Depending on the time of day ... take a taxi to the ROM and have lunch at C5 ... make a reservation ahead of time and have a great meal and interesting views from the top of the crystal.

My 2-cents anyway! :)

Some good suggestions. Thanks. It would be around 4 p.m. so traffic could be an issue. I am leaning towards Square One, actually, as there is supposed to be a quite decent Veggie Indian spot there and it looks easy enough to get to. I do like the ROM idea, however.

Oooh, Veggie Indian. Buy me dinner, and I just might pick you up at the airport and drive you back! We could have a mini-do! ;)

Careful - better make sure it is a IDINE place first - no? lol

That might be a good deal, actually. You'll only do it if you can get there via YUL and LGA, though, right? :D

Which Indian place are you thinking about?

This one here: http://www.saravanaabhavan.ca/

It is supposed to be quite decent. There aren't any places in YQR that do a Dosa, and I haven't had a really good one in YVR yet. I have been meaning to try the YVR location for a while, but I might just end up at the Mississauga one first.

It isn't by the Square One Mall, though, like I thought (it is on Hurontario Street). My knowledge of Mississauga is just a smidge above nil :)

Lots of great East Indian spots right beside the airport. Just grab a cab and head east on Airport Road. Waste of drive time to go all the way to Mississauga in my opinion.

Any interest in gambling? Woodbine Race Track is a 10-15 cab ride away. Slots or horse racing, if that turns ur crank.

Cheers,

By the way, many if not most of the limo drivers at YYZ are East Indian, so you can just hop in and tell them to take you to a great eatery!

Not South Indian (so no dosa's) but there's a good Hakka Chinese place called Asian Wok'n'Roll at the corner of Airport Rd and Derry.

It's run by people who used to have a chinese restaurant in India. Hakka is a spicy style of Chinese cooking that's quite popular in India.

(no financial relationship - well, they take my money when I eat there)

How about going for a run?

I enjoy running round airport environs to fill wasted hours inbetween flights. It is also a good way of getting in the right mood for the next flight

Directions: At YYZ take the shuttle to T3 and then (directions from inside the terminal) turn left and walk until you get to the end of the terminal. Don't keep on the approach road, but instead there is an exit off the sidewalk toward a small carpark. Walk diagonally across the carpark (follow your nose) and take the road that leads directly away from the airport and you can run alongside some wide relatively deserted roads for a few km.
Leave you bags in the left luggage.
Shower in the lounge (assuming you have access - if not PM me for a pass).

I vaguely recall there is a web site with "runs from airports" somewhere, but haven't done a recent search
