Read my post above. CBSA uses risk based scoring system and if you deviate substantially from the normal traveller (especially if you're a foreign alien) be prepared for additional questioning/referral to secondary.

For someone who seems quite competent in customs/immigration law, and that entering another one's country is a privilege not a right, your post is quite surprising.

Am surprised that no FTs have mentioned the case of Robert Dziekanski. This Polish immigrant was tasered to death at YVR by the RCMP. His issues began when NOBODY in YVR immigration could speak with him in his native language.

For those not aware of the issue, I suggest you watch the video. Fair warning, its horrific:

Nexus does not preclude you from having a CBSA officer question/inspect you. Who do you think you give your receipt to?

Also if you declare any goods or above your duty limit, the kiosk will automatically send you to secondary.

Just came through YVR again yesterday, no problems and nobody was a jerk.

In fact I've never had an unpleasant experience entering Canada, unless you count the CBSA agent deciding to scratch his back in front of me before handing back my passport, or having to queue for 3 hours because the first 2 agents weren't able to find my medical report on their system (but they were all very apologetic).

I'm not American or Canadian, not a PR either and I am Asian (N. American definition). I don't doubt they can be jerks sometimes but I suspect most people get through without any trouble.

nobody raised it since CBS agents eventually cleared him through immigration and it was only when he left the customs hall and was intercepted by the RCMP officers that the issues arose.

i would suggest that you tread very carefully around the inferences that are you making since one might construe your suggestion that CBS agents are the ones that were responsible versus the RCMP that was is a we bit tortious.

as to others having issues, oh well. if you don't want to deal with potentially annoying CBS agents, don't visit. i am sure some would consider the immigration formalities a cost of travel.

i recall a guy on FT was all up in arms when CBS agents examined his computer and found some questionable images.

actually, using my NEXUS on a trip back from SIN this March and on two trips from the UK in May and June, I was over on alcohol in all three cases (from SIN, I had 3.5L of various Kavalan and in May and June, I had 2.1L each time, 3 700ml bottles of Hakushu...). showed my card to the agent upon exit and was asked what I was over on...."alcohol only"...and was waived through. so no, there is no automatic secondary since the agent at the exit has discretion to send you to a secondary or not.

here is the other long thread about this exact same subject, I commented in it,

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...-cbsa-yvr.html

The weird thing about Canada is that their agents are annoying to both, locals and foreigners....if its not chasing one group for taxes in cigarettes its the other for whatever else. 50 or more trips to Gringoland , 2 to Canada (work) which is my lost and theirs (would love to go to Banff for example but I just cant justify the hassle)

They're suppose to be annoying because people lie....lie so so much. I cannot imagine the types of stories and tall tales that are told to these agents. In my previous post further up thread I mention going through UK immigration and getting hassle.....but my boyfriend and I looked the part of lazy backpackers from their perspective. Travelling for a few months, no jobs and we said we were heading home in 4 days? Yeah right. It didn't help that I didn't have access to our itinerary either! The questions were annoying but we answered honestly and after about 5 minutes we were on our way.

There was a moment when I thought 'I am never going back to the UK' but then I thought how silly that would be of me. I enjoy London and there's so much more I want to see and do there. I'm not going to let one person who may or may not be rude/annoying stop me from going.

Please come to Banff! It's beautiful and lovely and the mountains will make you forget those random questions you may OR MAY NOT get at the border in YYC.

My former neighbour works immigration at YVR. The guy is genuinely motivated about his job and I can see he wants to help people out, but he's also supremely jaded about his job simply because of the outright lies people tell. I don't have specific stories, but he really did say that the worst part was dealing with the people who were clearly there to scam the system.

that is consistent with my information from a CBS agent. soooo many bold face liars dealt with on a daily basis and you start to assume everyone is a liar.

from bringing live fish (yes, live fish in bags of water in checked bags), to rhino horns to child pornography. i really don't envy the job and frankly, if people don't like them and find they are being abrasive....whatever...to me, they are doing their jobs well then!!

I realize you probably meant small tropical fish, but I pictured a salmon. And it was hilarious.

I wish. They were small but only because they were babies but invasive species intended to be bread at restaurants.

Bread as in deep-fried or bred as in cultivated?

Anybody who complains about Canadian immigration officers need to go to the USA once and see how they treat their visitors.

Where? I've never had a bad experience with them. I mean, aside from having no feeling for time and being super slow, but that's about it.
