canada gas math ?

Ok, In Toronto now and gas is 1.11 per L CA, thus with US $ exchange rate of .88 the US per gallon price is just under $4.00 a gallon US. Is my math about right ?. If so, gas is about a dollar lower than last summer !.

B1 Nov 12, 2014 9:42 am

There are 3.785 liters in a US gallon. The current price in Toronto went down to C$1.16/L. Therefore, a US gallon costs C$4.40. If you use a credit card, you pay about 90 cents for a C$. So that's $3.95 US. In the US, the price is about $1 less. So if you want to buy gas, don't come to Canada for it.

And especially not Vancouver where we are at $1.30/L these days. Was $1.55 in June and over $1.43 just in Aug/Sept.

Thanks for the 3.785 #.
- Gas at COSTCO today was 1.11 per L. and my AMEX rate was .884. Thus less than $ 100 us to fill my 26 gallon tank !

-What i wont buy in Canada is any 'dairy' products. But it looks like PM Harper might make a deal with New Zealand on dairy products this week.

Not a fan of hormone free dairy?? ;)

Quota system does suck, but regulations do lead to better quality dairy.

Quite - I love the fact that all the Canadian dairy I buy is hormone free!

I wouldn't say not to lower pricing on the European cheese I buy mind you!

It's 99.4 or 99.9 per litre in most places here with the odd station at 98.9!

DirtyDan Nov 17, 2014 1:02 am

What drives me wild is when gasoline prices jump 10c a litre over night... that's 35c/gal US. Could you imagine that nonsense occurring south of the border? They'd riot; here we just shrug. I hate the market manipulation and await the day someone invents a battery that can run an electric car in -40*C weather.

Where do you live where it regularly gets to -40C? Yellowknife?

Even there it's an infrequent event.

In Toronto your average low in January is -7C.

(Only humans are impacted by windchill.)

Winnipeg occasionally sees -40C, albeit only a few times per decade.

Eleven of Canada's cities can expect at least one night of -30 °C weather each winter.

Average number of days in winter when the temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F). City Days:

Winnipeg, Manitoba 12
Regina, Saskatchewan 11
Thunder Bay, Ontario 7
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan 7
Saguenay, Quebec 7
Sherbrooke, Quebec 5
Calgary, Alberta 3
Sudbury, Ontario 3
Edmonton, Alberta 3
Trois-Rivières, Quebec 3
Québec City, Quebec 1

It doesn't need to get to -40 before electric cars' range are seriously depleted - it can start happening as low as -5, in part because heating the interior uses a lot of energy.

"It doesn't need to get to -40 before electric cars' range are seriously depleted - it can start happening as low as -5, in part because heating the interior uses a lot of energy."

Yes but it really depends on the quality of the electric car. In theory, yes. but a some electric cars (Model S) are equipped with a compensation system for the battery; keeps it cool in summer and warm in the winter- you lose some power of course, but it isn't enough to break a sweat over or have you considering other options

gglave Nov 19, 2014 7:27 am

I think what kills the electric car are these sort of edge use-cases.

"It works poorly at -40."

"I drove to Alberta in 2007. Couldn't do that in an electric car."

I'd love a Nissan Leaf - Unfortunately (or fortunately), I live in Vancouver, so I can't afford one.

Under 1.oo L ?

Ok, in Toronto the Costco gas price is only 1.07 L today, so if Alberta crude is projected at $ 75 for 2015 average, will there be less than 1.00 L in 2015 ??

I doubt it, there is probably going to some crack answer of "We misjudged our production and costs are going up" or something to that effect. When oil costs go up, fuel costs go up. When oil costs go down, fuel costs go up.

Highest prices now are 99.9.

Many places are at 94.4 per litre.

I guess that's why you change your FT handle? ;)

DirtyDan Nov 27, 2014 4:36 pm

When they say $75 / Bbl, that's the price paid in Cushing, Oklahoma (the central "depository and place of exchange for all things oil" in North America). So technically we need to add the shipping costs to the oil... but the companies making record profits would tell us that most of our gasoline price is tax anyway.

I'd be surprised if the prices ever drop back down to reasonable even if we had $50 oil. They know what we're willing to pay now.

Nope. It's because despite the efforts of the Central Canadian Airline other airlines fly ex-YEG and avoid the nonsense that is YYC and/or YYZ.

87.4/litre in many places now

Same station was 93.6 this afternoon. I can handle it dropping 6 cents a day for a while lol. I better pull the trigger and fill up soon though, I just know I'm going to get burned lol.

Not in Toronto now but sounds like Costco gas should be double digit. NICE.

Canadian dollars falling too. NOT NICE.

ProudEdmontonian Dec 15, 2014 3:30 pm

81.9 is the lowest I have seen so far with many places at 82.4

OttawaMark Dec 16, 2014 11:14 am

91.9 in downtown Ottawa yesterday

YVR Cockroach Dec 16, 2014 12:35 pm

Just moved a shade under $1 at the Costco down the road from YQQ yesterday, and actually dropped another cent since, so C$4.48 or so per imperial gallon.

ProudEdmontonian Dec 17, 2014 10:04 am

80.9 in lots of locations

Jiatong Dec 12, 2015 7:41 am

Why Toronto is $1.00 CD per L ?

Why is Toronto gas at 1.00 L ?. Oil in mid 30's per barrel. Is it holiday uptick, Liberal tax plan, or just cheater stations.

The Wynner is calling the shots with all energy prices in Ontario!!!

The oil price is in US dollars - it's not down in C$. As for pricing, there are not many competitors in the Canadian market and it's been established that there was sufficient demand at $1.30 per litre, so $1 is a deal. Of course taxes are higher in Canada for reasons that are well known.

Not sure what the "Liberal Tax plan" would have to do with it (I assume you are talking about the federal Liberals) as they haven't raised taxes on gas.

The thing I find interesting is the difference in the price of gas in southern Ontario. I live in Mississauga but work in Brantford (my wife works in Toronto and takes the GO to work in case anyone was wondering why I live and work where I do). The price of gas in Brantford is almost always about 5-7 cents a litre cheaper than in Toronto/Mississauga. I have no idea why this is the case.

Brantford is closer to these locations and it might have an effect on more competitive pricing.

I never considered this, but you might be correct. You do need to show a status card to buy gas on reservations, but I have heard that a small tip will cause the attendant to look the other way.

I used to top up on HWY 45 at the Alderville First Nations Esso. They are usually 20% less than GTA pricing.

Why is it $1.22/L in Vancouver? I get our GVRD tax and all, but even out in the valley it is hovering around 1.12/L

There's also a few other fairly significant taxes thrown in by the province, besides the 17¢ or so Translink tax (6.75¢ cents for BCTFA tax and 6.67¢ cents for and BC Carbon Tax). Not sure if Ontario (and others) have the same level of additional taxes added on by the govt? Or maybe demand is high enough here in the LMD that they can gouge us without fear of lost business..

In other news, the Burnaby Super Save gas station was priced around $1.12/$1.13 this morning..
