MCT at YVR US to Intl
I've searched here and in the AC forum and amazingly didn't find the answer.
Looking to understand the MCT at YVR. Coming in from the US, heading to Europe. Both legs are on AC. KVS says this (abbreviated): [KVS Availability Tool 7.0.2/Diamond - Reference: Minimum Connection Time [MCT]: YVR/AC-AC] Code:
DD DI ID II |
There is only one terminal at YVR. Well, there is what they call the South Terminal which is for private planes, small planes and freight. Highly doubtful you're coming in there -- I have never been in that terminal, all my flights within Canada, to the US and International have all been at the main terminal.
You'll likely have to go through customs when you arrive, collect your bags and re-check them, though I could be wrong -- if you're at the same section of gates and they're able to check your bags through that would make life much easier. From my experience the flights to and from the US use one area of the terminal and the international flights are in a slightly different area. I have never done a connecting flight through YVR, just arrived and departed there so that is not my expertise. But it is nothing like O'Hare or LHR, it is a very small airport in comparison. |

I wonder if it is M=Main and S=South?? But why would that allow a shorter time? It would seem that staying in the main terminal would allow a shorter time... There are exceptions listed in the KVS output, but without knowing M vs S, I can't tell if they apply. |
In thinking further, they only make you claim bags, go through customs and re-check them when the connection is for another destination within Canada, so bags should be checked through and there ought not to be that element to the connection.
I am a bit baffled as well by the time estimates, since at YVR domestics are in one wing of the main terminal that might be a 10 minute walk at most, and then flights to/from the US are in one part of the other wing, and the international ones go in another part, meaning walking time is only about 5 minutes. It might be a matter of getting out into the main terminal and then getting back in and going through security again if the gates are not in the same part of the airport. I took a look at the airport's web site and this is their link: http://wwwnew.yvr.com/en/navigating-...rough-YVR.aspx -- it doesn't offer help on timelines, but there is a contact us link and they should be able to help confrim how much time to allow. |
You will come in at the "E" gates and depart from the "D" gates.
http://wwwnew.yvr.com/Libraries/Maps..._Map.sflb.ashx Once you deplane, follow the signs for international connections. You'll go through a cursory passport check then be sent on to your gate. Once you're off the plane you're looking at a 10-12 minute walk. |

You can see the terminal information via the [Timetable] function in the KVS Tool:

Sorry to dig up an old thread. Trying to figure out the MCT at YVR for the following:
SFO-YVR on AC (as part of a bigger itinerary), then on a different ticket, YVR-SEA-LAX on AS Would 75 minutes be enough? |

Keep in mind that you have to clear both arrival customs (primary inspection line and secondary inspection line), then outbound security, and US CBP Pre-Clearance in Vancouver.
If it is early morning on a weekday, then departure lines are longer. It might be do-able with Global Entry / Nexus, but I probably won't bet on it. If on line check is offered for your AS leg, then I would definitely do that! |
As has been stated many many times on FT, MCT represents a carrier's willingness to assume the risk of rebooking in the case of a misconnect.
OP is on separate tickets, so he won't be a connecting passenger. If he no shows on his xYVR, that ticket will be cancelled and OP will need to buy a new ticket at walkup prices and will be able to use whatever value is retained under the fare rules of the original ticket (less any penalties). That could be anywhere from 0 to a little to a lot. I typically allow triple the MCT for separate tickets because that accounts for most of the risks of delay. |
Thanks for the replies. How much time do you recommend for such a connection then?

Do you have: NEXUS? Global Entry? Premium cabin or priority with departing airline? Are you checking bags? What passport are you travelling with? |
No Nexus/Global entry.
Will be flying in J/F. US passport. Yes on checked bags. |

Will be flying in J/F. US passport. Yes on checked bags. This doesn't include clearing Canada Border Services and picking up your bag from the carousel - I'd allow an hour for that. So call it 2.5 hours - An hour to get your bag and get into Canada, and 90 minutes to drop your bag and get out. Allow 30 minutes for the inevitable delays out of SFO, and call it three hours even. |
