double upgrade
I had a great experience with the budget rent-a-car location here in Toronto.
I was looking for a car to rent for a month and the best rate I got was at budget for a compact car.
At the time of the reservation I asked the representative if it would be possable to get a complimentary class upgrade and he said "no problem" and promtly got me a fullsize.
When I went to pick up the car the branch manager (it was a franchise branch)told me that I have a intrepid. I personnaly don't like the Intrepid so I asked him if he has anything else. He just gave me LHS. Just like that a went from a comact NEON to a luxary LHS!
I saved easily 1000 bucks (on a monthly rental) just by asking!! :d

Good show, GreyOwl.
For the most part, I have been pleased with Budget too. I get an upgrade to a Marquis maybe....say one time in four. Not bad odds, actually.
The only downside that I see to Budget is that some of the franchise locations can be quite lax on service. I.e., staffed by morons. Other than that, I like Budget a great deal.
*Now, if they would only comp me to a Jag convertible for the weekend. Alas, the one day that I rented a Jag; I had to cough up $129 USD.

At the DEN location, I and 2 of my colleagues had a town car reserved. Get there and no Town cars...nothing bigger than a compact....then agent tries to get me to take a two door SAAB..asked what else is on the lot...Says "Only other car we have is a Jag!...but you cannot have it as someone else reserved it." I said "Yes, but you had no trouble giving my town car away did you?" Needless to say we were tooling around DEN in a brand new Jag that week!

I liked your upgrade stories and wanted to book a car from Budget for the first time.
See what happened, and system is still not up after hours and hours:

I Would suggest calling a franchise location
and ask to speak to the branch manager (they are the only ones who can really change prices etc.)and tell them that you would like to try budget fo a change....... ask him /her if he would give you a courteous upgrade(s?) you might just be surprised at the results.
