BA Luxembourg

I’ve been trying to find the history of BA’s operations in Luxembourg but have had no luck so far. Does anyone have any information?

Also, does anyone know how this route is performing for BA?

I vaguely remember flying out of LHR T1 to LUX, so perhaps it was inherited from BD? I guess that was around 2012/3.

In Dec 2009 I flew G-DOCB LGW-LUX, I still remember it as one of the nicest BA SH I have taken so far with a fab crew and CAT III landing in total fog in LUX.
IIRC it switched W2010/11 or S2011 to LHR

Definitely remember flying BA in the early 80s to LUX. Someone will probably correct me, but don't ever remember BD flying to Lux. For quite some years BA pulled out and there was just Luxair. In the early 2000s, until about 2010 or 11, BA flew from LGW at the time alternatives were Luxair (v. expensive) and VLM from City.

Don't know the financials, but BA flights are always well filled (and not just around weekends) and there's now a third rotation on some days.

It did operate from T1 for a while - I believe this was after it moved from LGW, to fill some ex-BD slots (and give the aircraft some work!)

I do remember flying to LUX on BA metal in '08 (or early '09?) on a 737-500.

In the 2000s, there was a reshuffle of routes and airlines. IIRC BAA squeezed LG out of Heathrow (in the 1990s they used Airbus 300 and Boeing 737 on the LHR-LUX route but they eventually downsized to ERJs, something Heathrow didn't like at all). LG moved all ops to LCY (and into VLM's/Cityjet's territory). BA switched their flights from LGW to LHR in early 2011. U2 (LGW) and FR (STN) launched flights to LUX recently.

In 1988/1989 Luxair had two B737-200 LUX-LHR rotations, one early in the morning and one around lunchtime. BA had one LHR - LUX rotation early in the evening which was operated by a mix of B737-200s and BAC1-11s. The BA rotation switched to A320 (original G-BUS* series) operation I think in March 1990.

They removed the Sunday evening late rotation last Spring which was a pain for weekends away bike racing. Is that one back again?

There are some figures on passenger numbers and routes on the airports wiki page and then a link to the source of that data so I suggest you have a look at that as it is likely to show more than the destinations listed on the wiki page

Looking through the annual reports, LHR was the 7th most popular destination in 2017. In 2015, BA had 146,000 passengers, up from 132,000 in 2014.

By 2009, the year they launched flights to LCY, Luxair had downsized to Q400s and, yes, BAA were not happy about that!

The Q400 were an increase in capacity. The ERJs are tiny. When they switched over to LCY, they used a mix of aircraft (ERJs, Fokker 50, Q400). I regularly saw them when departing LCY.

Not on a Saturday in July! I can't post a link to my previous post but you should be able to find it from my username. We had booked a day trip to Luxembourg but the second flight of the day was cancelled so we were booked on the return flight straight back again. When I spoke to BA to cancel, I was told that the cancellations were due to Rolls Royce engine issues so I don't think you can read anything into the financials from that.
