Rather poorly judged advert getting BA into hot water

https://www.theguardian.com/business...ino-winners-ad

British Airways has been accused of glamorising gambling after it ran a television commercial featuring a couple easily winning money on slot machines, triggering complaints to the advertising regulator and anger from MPs and campaigners.
The ASA are looking into it.

This is just stupid. So are airlines not supposed to make advertisements about Las Vegas? Or should BA be sued for playing “Absolutely Fabulous” where you can see Patsy smoking and snorting?!!! Come on!

Well, let's reverse the question: should airlines be the only ones allowed to promote ads that make people dream about making easy money through gambling in Vegas whilst no one else can? Should BA be allowed to run an ad that Vegas casinos would not be allowed to because of their own agreed guidelines?

Of course, you may consider that the gambling industry set standards are stupid, but within the context of limits to gambling advertising in the UK, I think that the only think which is rather naive here is BA not realising that their developing an ad on Vegas casinos that no Vegas casino would be able to promote would likely lead to complaints against them.

The advertisement was apparently cleared for broadcast:

”A British Airways Holidays spokesperson said: “This advert is one of a series which has been broadcast by us over the last three years, promoting a range of special memories that millions of British Airways Holidays’ customers experience when they travel with us every year.

“The advert was cleared with the industry body, Clearcast, ensuring it is appropriate for broadcast.”

I wonder if the clue might be in the first part of the quote about the "past three years"? If I'm not mistaken, the guidelines adopted by the gambling industry are a lot more recent than that so it is quite possible that BA run their proposed ad beore those were adopted? The ad would have been in line with industry guidelines then but does look an outlier now. I may be completely wrong of course and this may have nothing to do with that.

The once a year passengers experience the rubbish BA throw at you once they have your cash. They don't get the service that those who reside in the CCR get or who spend more than half their life in the pointy end of aircraft, generally paid for by someone else.

If you have used Easy Jet or Norwegian or KLM and then use BA you get to know pretty quickly just how far this airline has declined.

I totally agree with your point, but from a BA prospective I don’t believe this report will impact the policy makers whilst ever the profits grow. I did two CE flights yesterday both full including seven rows on a MAN / LHR and both were full in economy. On the AMS leg what I did notice was that a very high percentage of the passengers were not British, so either they don’t see the surveys, price is competitive or it’s just a convenient flight for them to choose

Generating the belief that walking away from a casino with a net win is likely is, in my opinion, dishonest and advertising by law has, to be Honest, Lawful and Decent. A close friend of mine is a problem gambler if you know the one you might understand quite how harmful adverts like this are.

It is a constant wonder to me that people are so bad at understanding probabilities.

Alright, then how about all these news articles about the couple in the UK that just won millions in the lottery? I guess it is the same?

It is not generating the belief as you stated, only recording one couple’s experience, which I can only take at face value to be true. I would have more issue if it was a made up story.

With respect, why did BA not publish a more realistic advert of people losing money, which is the experience of the vast majority of those who go to Las Vegas? You may not believe this Kanderson but those shiny airconditioned casinos were not built by charities.

Does anybody seriously think that they'll win more than they'll lose on slots / roulette etc.?

Gamblers with issues know that as well as anybody else... but they can't stop. They don't gamble because they believe some BA advert that shows people winning.

Ooooh yes!!! Just like many believe they can stop alcohol/cocaine/pot/cigarettes whenever they want and are not addicted.

I was chatting to my brother who's lived on Guernsey for over 25 years and mentioned Aurigny Air Services rise to stardom. Once he'd stopped laughing, he said the loss making airline is seen as a bit of a joke amongst the islanders.

Could be curtains for BA after 29th March - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...al-Brexit.html
