Brain of BAEC 2018 - Number one

A little puzzle to kick the year off, conferring is allowed

A well read British Airways pilot studies the following on their travels
  • Lubricates in ATH
  • Trees in LCA
  • Poultry in IST
  • Blondes in AMM
  • Ceramics in PEK
What do they study when they take their aircraft for it’s D check to Cardiff?
You do need to get the connection between all of the points.

Also, while Cyprus and Cypress are (broadly) homophones, not sure that one quite works

How about this for Question Two?

If:
- Brazil is GIG
- Canada is YYC
- China is PEK
- Mexico is CUN
- South Africa is JNB

Then what is the USA?

No to answers so far (IAD, JFK, BOS).

I'll add that this is a BA context.

I was thinking it was to do with Olympics but the Mexico Olympics were in Mexico city not Cancun.

Could it possibly be to do with routes of a specific BA aircraft?

Routes, yes. Specific aircraft, no.

I have a few more country/airport clues but I'll wait a bit to see if anyone is inspired first.
