I have a question to all those who've completed their PHX TP run or have experience of what i'm asking.

I have this TP run booked for next April with a mate, though we're taking a week to get up to mischief in AZ and Vegas rather than stay one night. So I would rather head back to HEL after landing back into LHR than fly the last LHR-OTP leg and then still have to get back to HEL. The timings of the last flights are landing at LHR T3 at 10:25 then LHR-OTP at 19:00. Has anyone been able to persuade the AA check-in guys at PHX to ticket luggage through to LHR rather than OTP with the excuse we have 8.5 hours in LHR so want to get fresh clothes, re-pack, etc? I've been able to before but that was because the last flight was the next morning which is more plausible.

I asked to short check when I was in PHX. My plan was that I would collect the bags, put them into Left Luggage at T5 before heading off to OTP. This was more due to convenience than necessity. I figured paying the £20 left luggage fee was worth it avoid faffing around at OTP & LHR carousels, lugging them to/from the OTP hotel plus needing to check in bags at OTP.

The check-in agent gave me an emphatic no - and was quite aggressive about it - more aggressive than I thought was necessary. I guess he's fed up with people asking him that question. He said they absolutely would not short-check at all.

Maybe you might get a different check-in agent that is more amenable, but if you get this guy - no bloody chance. I'd never rely on being able to short-check. If it's a nice-to-have and you can, it's a bonus. But never rely on it (i.e. not booking return positioning flights).

Thanks for the confirmation! I wonder because of the PHX TP run those guys at PHX have been asked a fair few times to short check?

I'll probably not risk it and see if i can do HBO with a back pack!

Agreed - we're so low on the radar, we don't even register as a blip.

This is all down to domestic hidden city ticketing - and with PHX being a hub location, the problem is likely endemic.

I tried to explain why I wanted to short check - and that I was fully intending to continue to OTP, but he was having none of it.

As an aside, my concern was genuine. My luggage was delayed getting to me on the outbound trip due to a TSA inspection. This was an inconvenience, but it was fine. For the return trip, it would have been a much bigger problem - as I was only going to be in OTP for 12 hours. The idea of short checking to LHR - is that if it didn't arrive at the carousel, I would have asked for it to be held at LHR while I went to OTP and back.

So as part of my Plan B, I went into the Concorde room and asked at the service desk if they could check if my luggage was actually on the same inbound flight as me. If it hadn't been, I would then have either asked if my OTP flight could have been moved to the later flight so I could have collected my luggage, or asked for it to be held at LHR while I went off to OTP. They were very helpful in the Concorde room and called the luggage services for me to check, putting emphasis on the point I was a First customer. All was fine in the end.

Usually not one for dredging up the past, but in this instance it might be worth it.

Somehow, in the blink of an eye, we’re 5-years on since a very large group of airplane geeks lovers tookover the unexpected HGI in PHX. For many this was the halfway point of an extensive tier points run, myself included.

The pool party was extravagant (as much as it can be in that hotel!) with many duty-free bottles & local pizza. Some of us did not sleep that night….

What made it special for me was a) it was my first (& only) run and b) I made a few friends & definitely lots of connections out of it.

So I thought this needs commemorating. A get together in London (thurs 24 Aug or Fri 25 Aug, to match the days most of us were in PHX). If you are interested, could you put a little note here of what date suits best and once we see numbers, I can find a location.

p.s. anyone is welcome to attend, not just the PHX4LIFE crew.

p.p.s if nobody is interested I’ll go back to my cave & pop back in 5 years for the Tin anniversary 😅
