What I am wondering is the amount - when I quote the return and compare the normal fares on the website, the difference in taxes and surcharges only comes to about $60. ADP does not apply here as transit is <24h. Is it worth calling again and trying with a different agent ?
Are you trying to apply the GUF to all flights in the booking so long haul goes WT->WTP and short haul goes ET->CE, or are you just trying to apply it to the long haul sectors?

If you just upgraded the long haul to WTP looking at the figures I wouldn't expect anything to be payable (apart from maybe a few pounds due to recalculations of fees and charges with exchange rate movements).

For GVA-LHR-JFK ET/WT TFC per person is:
Airport Passenger Security & Noise Charge - Switzerland 26.70 CHF
Passenger Service Charge - United Kingdom 61.50 CHF
Customs User Fee - USA 5.65 CHF
Transportation Tax(Departure) - USA 18.20 CHF
Transportation Tax(Arrival) - USA 18.20 CHF
Animal & Plant Health User Fee (Aphis) - USA 3.95 CHF
Immigration User Fee - USA 7.00 CHF
Passenger Civil Aviation Security Service Fee - USA 5.60 CHF
Passenger Facility Charge 4.50 CHF
Carrier imposed charge 294.00 CHF
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total charges 445.30 CHF

For GVA-LHR-JFK ET/WTP TFC per person is:
Airport Passenger Security & Noise Charge - Switzerland 26.70 CHF
Passenger Service Charge - United Kingdom 61.50 CHF
Customs User Fee - USA 5.65 CHF
Transportation Tax(Departure) - USA 18.20 CHF

Passenger Facility Charge 4.50 CHF
Carrier imposed charge 294.00 CHF
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total charges 445.30 CHF

So there is no TFC difference, and as long as your connections in the UK are less than 24 hrs as you noted I wouldn't expect any APD to be payable.

many thanks for your help. I've just called again, and they were working on it....it seemed to be complicated. In the end it came to CHF 62 extra....I took it as I had spent enough time at that stage, and it was still better than 250 !

Resurrecting an old thread, I've just UUA'd a one way WTP-CW (club suites, yay!) from LHR-YYZ. I did this on BA.com and the cost of this was 24,000 Avios plus £100 - which I'm very happy with since the cash difference in fare was £1100, however when I look at the e-ticket receipt for the change whilst I can see the £100 charge, the 'Taxes/fees/charges' section shows £0. Is this £100 about right?

Just did that for a flight in a week. 30k avios and £51. EZE-LHR from WT+ to CW. Pleasant surprise as CW seats were selling at the highest fare bucket, so I assumed there was no availability.

LHR-YYZ one way for WTP TFC is £318.62 and in CW TFC is £418.62. The £100 difference is the additional carrier surcharge,

You can always double check yourself by pricing up normal cash tickets on ba.com and looking at the TFC figure - I recommend doing so before calling to do the UuA so you know how much is should cost.

Karfa's suggestion works a treat. I followed that method recently and successfully upgraded WTP to CW both ways Mex to LHR for 32 gbp plus 60000 avios.

I had found LAX selling Wtp to Dublin via Heathrow for only 600 usd. However, the uua involved 750 usd of additional fees, so still cheaper to fly from Mex.

Just booked a BOS-BCN WTP and wanted to UUA the BOS-LHR segments. Was quoted $750 for both or $375 for each TA segment. When I used to UUA this route last year, it was no more than 100-200 USD each way. I had no idea the YQ had jumped so much! I'm assuming the booking engine/gold line is quoting the correct additional YQ for this trip.

Take a look at what's quoted on ITA now:

Fare 1: Carrier BA INW9C7S3 BOS to BCN (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code I, J

I just booked DOH-LHR-BOS-LHR in WTP and using a GUF to Business incurred only another 35 pounds in charges. Whilst this is in line with Matrix what I find surprising is that YQ is massively higher when applied to a pure award booking for the same routing. I recollect a similar phenomenon on flights out of Brazil
where there are restrictions on surcharges applied to flights but BA award tickets still incur surcharges.

Although the BA website will quote high taxes and fees when redeeming awards originating from GRU, booking an award on the phone in my experience will not.

Thanks for this, Am I correct in thinking given your location that this would be booking through a BA Brazil office?

Thanks

Hi guys, great topic and thanks for all the insights! I am having the same problem just now and maybe you can help me:

I have booked MEX - LHR in WT+ and just called BA for the upgrade to CW. The agent quoted me 25.000 avios and 300 USD$ taxes/fees (249€) per person for the upgrade. However, I have just checked the BA ticket sale like KARFA explained and can see that the taxes/surcharges for WT+ are 345,27 US$ and for CW are 409,83 US$. So the difference should be only 65 US$ and not 300.

Any chance to convince an agent to go down the taxes/fees or any other way to book this? I don*t have the upgrade option with avios online however. Maybe you have also experience TTmex ?

Thank you and best!

Im pretty sure that on some sale fares in WTP its actually in some cases the carrier surcharge that is lowered, alongside part of the fare.
