Mugs in Club Europe

Sorry if this has already been posted but the white mugs in club Europe look like they could have been bought on the cheap in a particular Scandinavian shop. Definitely a down grade from the Royal Doulton cups previously.

Worcester Jun 18, 2017 10:45 am

Oh you are discussing actual mugs. Will put back the popcorn.

I think they had to replace the old mugs because they now use much smaller trays and they wouldn't be able to fit everything on otherwise. That's my theory anyway!

I agree, the old ones were much nicer.

mjh0 Jun 18, 2017 10:48 am

In terms of getting the job done the new mugs are much better.

They don't readily slop the drink all over your table at the slightest hint of chop.

They don't have an absurdly huge surface area which helps your drink go cold before you can finish it.

In terms of label caché, yeah, they haven't got that.

Deltus Jun 18, 2017 10:50 am

Why can't they use the physical design that they have now (which I agree is better), and put some nice branding/pictures on the outside? Cost of printing onto a mug is pennies, surely?

Really? I prefer them as the beverage stays hotter longer than those squat tea cups.

how many mugs does BA have? It soon mounts up and a penny here and a penny there soon mounts up and pays Alex's bonus !

Finavia Jun 18, 2017 12:15 pm

Well if you want premium Scandinavian mugs, fly Finnair, you drink out of Ittala mugs on their flights. I'm rather more concerned about the quality of what's offered inside the mugs in CE! Worst coffee ever!!

scottishpoet Jun 18, 2017 12:25 pm

I much prefer the new mug

Can I help you Jun 18, 2017 12:37 pm

The new mugs are now used to standardise with the CW china.

Talking of mugs, I quite miss yours.

Run and get me a G&T, there's a pet. Well walk anyway

What with your demands in the bedroom I'm getting a trifle tired.

Padmeister Jun 18, 2017 1:24 pm

Only on the BA board could there be a discussion regarding the size and quality of mugs on board 😂

Ldnn1 Jun 18, 2017 2:04 pm

Mugs in Club Europe
Are you referring to the people that actually paid a hefty premium to fly in CE? ;)

To be fair, eating trifle is about as exciting as it gets for her in the bedroom these days.

Ancient Observer Jun 18, 2017 2:29 pm

They are not necessarily the Mugs............ their employers/the people paying their flying bills are the Mugs.

Good summary!

bibbju Jun 18, 2017 2:30 pm

I really liked the old cups. Not a fan of the new mugs. It feels like I get a lot less tea in the new mugs? Or maybe the old cups were more fiddly to hold so it took longer to drink?

This forum is the best when it comes to navel-gazing. ^

navylad Jun 18, 2017 3:58 pm

Perhaps they didn't want them always being stolen like the old ones; often saw people putting theirs into their bag

The only demand I have ever made of you in any bedroom is to make my bed and take the laundry out.

HIDDY - that's rich from you as the Grandfather of this Forum! At least I have my own teeth to eat the blasted trifle!

I remember one woman coming and asking the crew to see if they had any different mugs as her collection was nearly complete.

The nerve!

V10 Jun 19, 2017 3:42 am

The mind really does boggle. Do people really collect BA mugs?

I can only guess at them being proudly displayed in nice teak display cabinets in semi-detached houses across Surbiton, next to some splendid objets de merde mail ordered from the Franklin Mint.

Far too much sherry in the trifle.

TRISTAR1979 Jun 19, 2017 3:59 am

I liked the old mugs, but I think the new mugs are better for a nice mug of tea with your breakfast... However, I have now done 6 flights on CE Domestic, and they all had one thing in common... No tea spoon to stir your tea with, so you end up using the handle of the fork or knife. I would have thought that in Business class a tea spoon could have been included???

Answer to the first - people collect anything - cups, glasses you name it.

My Surbiton days are no more so I will defer to your imaginings. I suspect that ex-Her Next Door would take the plastic teaspoons from Easyjet.

I prefer Gin to Sherry but are you trifling with my affections?:D:D

I thought there was one included in the napkin?

whouse Jun 19, 2017 4:16 am

For many years I was the supplier of tablware to major airlines including BA. A large airline can go through 700,000 cups a year and nearly as many saucers. There is a fine balance between thickness (for durability) and thinness (for weight saving). So go to mug only and take off any decoration and on this one item alone an airline can save £100,000+
Not what the M3 or Singapore do>

Not on my last 6 domestic flights. The Napkin contained 2 Knife's, 1 Fork, 1 Desert Spoon and the usual salt and pepper, but no tea spoon. No doubt the e-mail is on it's way:

"Our customers on UK Domestic routes have told us that they prefer to stir their tea with the shaft of their fork" in the interests of decency I wont go any further with this one. ;)

There's no accounting for taste with some people.

I'm with you there, gin is certainly my preferred tipple in these warm days. As for trifling with your affections, I would not dream of it. I fear that any attempt to do so would incur a sternly-wielded hairbrush having failed to rise to the occasion like one of my soufflés. :o

FatnLoud Jun 19, 2017 4:38 am

There were a load of the old BA mugs in the Royal Doulton factory shop in Stoke a while ago, if anyone is determined to plug the gaps in their collection.

I personally like those little black tea bowls you get in JAL First. But they're too fragile for me to "collect".

Right - you provide the gin and I'll teach you how to soufflé. Then we can eat them with all those teaspoons that I've nicked from off Tristar1999's tray when he wasn't looking!

There's a pile of them.in the drawer that the mugs are stored in. The crew should be giving you a spoon with your drink.

Deal and I promise not to provide Gordon's or Bombay Sapphire :p

Better not leave it too long or the spoons will have been enhanced to those horrid plastic stirrers that are served at the local greasy spoon or motorway service stations.

Nothing wrong with a mug than a cup for a hot drink. They can usually hold more, keep the drink warmer for longer and much stronger so less prone to breakages. The only thing I don't like about the CE mugs as they have a print of the London skyline across them which makes them look cheap.

The new CE mugs are plain. The old CE cups had various scenes from across the UK shown on them not just London skyline.

Thank god! Regardless of the scene it still looked tacky!

Well, Royal Doulton is Scandinavian now (or Nordic to be precise). The company was bought by Fiskars (you know the scissors with orange handles).

Understand less than 20% of the occupants in CE actually Pay for Their own seat. The Bulk are Corporate, Awards or Upgraded Awards.

You drink coffee on BA? What are you, some sort of revolutionary who dumped tea off a ship in Boston Harbor? I'm horrified, just horrified . . . :D

And for the record, I was one of those kids who "Dumped the tea," at the Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum. Possibly more than once. Maybe not a good forum to talk about this . . . :o

Where do you get your data to make this assertion?
