Or private (sailing) yachts. We once took a couple from Cape Town to St. Helena on our yacht. Very interesting place to visit. There are several businesses now hurting quite a bit, as they had made investments and plans with the opening of the airport and commensurate increase in visitors in mind. With that on indefinite hold...

In addition to regular scheduled service by RMS St. Helena (http://rms-st-helena.com/) there are occasional yacht visits (asking around Royal Cape Yacht club might lead to a lift).

As well, passage can be booked on the Dutch tall ship Europa, which stops annually in St. Helena after her Antarctic season, on the way north from Cape Town (www.barkeuropa.com)

A few other planned calls are noted on this page (although I wouldn't be surprised if it is incomplete): http://www.cruisetimetables.com/crui...nt-helena.html

Piece in the Times today entitled "Stranded on the island of broken dreams".

Islanders currently stranded thanks to no airport and the RMS St Helena being stuck in Cape Town with a broken propeller.

To be fair, they would be in exactly the same position even if nobody had ever thought to build an airport there!

Not necessarily. If no airport had been planned they may have sought a more robust service by sea.

But hasn't St Helena always only had one regular ship? If it breaks, it breaks - it happens to all forms of transport.

I think your understanding is correct but perhaps there were other options available (at a cost) if no airport had been planned.

Interesting interview with the CEO of Atlantic Star Airlines. Weirdly, by saying "TUIfly will initially operate your flights" it seems to imply that they are committed to using a 737, but I suspect that's a mistake by the interviewer: if the airport can't handle a 737 safely, they won't be flying one.

I think the plan was to operate the service with TUI Airlines Belgium E190.

Article in today’s Times that the government of St Helena chartered an Avro RJ85 to fly 60 passengers from Cape Town and a similar number back since the ship used to connect the two locations is currently out of service. The flight took 6 hours as a refuelling stop was needed.

The Comair service remains suspended but the government of St Helena has put out a tender for commercial air services. So, there is a glimmer of hope.

I don't have a copy of the paper to hand (or electronic access) but where would the flight have refuelled? Windhoek?
