Noisy 787!

BA now flies a 787 rather than 747 (boo hoo) between LHR and MEX. I noticed recently that the noise level on my return flight to MEX in J was extremely high. I asked the crew about this and they said, yes it's normal. Having flown an A350 a few days earlier, the difference was quite astounding. Am I just imagining it? Thanks.

Greetings from Ciudad de México. If you were on the service 2 days ago, it was a bit noisier that usual, particularly if in WTP or WT. If in the forward cabin of CW (or First, presumably) then it was fairly serene as usual. If your last flight was an A350 (and you were near the front) then yes the 787-9 would be noisy, but it's not a patch on the 777 - which I suspect is the realistic alternative for MEX at this time of the year, rather than the 747. UD 747 is of course great for this, but it is still noisier there than in the front of a 787, in my experience. I can sort of tell since I have settings on my phone for listening to music/BBC radio App for different aircraft type, and the sequence is
- 777
- 747
- 787
- 380
- 350
But on any aircraft it makes a big difference where you are sat.

Glad you said that. I feel the 787 is noisy, but as people seem to like it I thought it was my imagination

The passenger intra-flight noise experience will never be figures on the screen in front of Mr Cruz, whereas fuel consumption will. Besides from this remark, more aimed at the fact that 747s are replaced, your main point is the noise as such. IMHO, of the more modern aircrafts, there is less percieved noise with Airbus than Boeing. A350 is a favourite in more than the low noise level.

Now - why so specifically the one 2 days ago?

Well - that explains it :-)

Personally I've found the 787 to be remarkably quiet - but I've never been behind the engines.

I have found it has an annoying high pitched whine though.

The 787 is definitely a lot noisier than the 359 and the 388, but as cws rightly says, much less than the 777 or the main deck 744 (upper deck is quieter). I'll admit to have found the 787 a disappointment on the whole and look forward to BA receiving their 359s which I much prefer. Flew the 388 yesterday again which I still like a lot and will be on the 744 in a few days where I always enjoy the UD and (though I know many here don't) for idiosyncratic reasons, the first row of the F cabin.

I’ve flown on the 787 a number of tomes and it has been quiet sitting in CW or the Qatar equivalent

I think BA's 777 and 747 are definitely both noisier than the 787 (you hear much more cutlery clanking in a BA 787 than a 747 despite almost half the number of passengers in F, in my experience).

As ugly as it is (other than the wings!), the A350 is a beautiful plane to fly in. Hope BA does it justice when they are delivered.

Sorry to nitpick but BA isn’t getting 359s (A350-900s), but rather 35Ks (A350-1000s)

Ah yes, very true ^ , but I'm hoping those will be at least as nice as the 359!

I found 787's even in CW not very quiet. But I feel for the crew, as the galleys in some planes are very noisy places to work in - 777's in particular.
