Thanks, but I mean, if I check in at LHR for LHR-FRA(LH C)-PVG(LH F)-SIN(SQ C)-MEL(SQ C), would they give me the 40kg allowance all the way through?

Then, a few days later, on the same trip, MEL-AKL (NZ C) would they give me NZ's allowance or the 40kg from the rest of the ticket?

Same story on the return.

Actually this is hard...cos there really isn't any clear defination if you break the journey. I would think that if you are going to PVG the same day, it would be 40kg. But once you break it, it would be 30kg for the remainder of the journey.

The only time you would get the same baggage allowance on your entire ticket is if you are travelling to/from North America, and Brazil. But otherwise, I would think you are restricted to only 30kg in Business class and 40kg if you're in F for one part of your journey.

Would you have exactly 40kg?

The only place I'll be breaking my journey is in MEL, meaning I'll fly LHR-FRA-PVG-SIN-MEL all together in LH C/F and SQ C.
The MEL-AKL remaining on the ticket doesn't matter - 30kgs is fine.

On the return, there is AKL-MEL, which again doesn't matter, then SYD-BKK-LHR-BEY with TG F and BD C, all together. Would this mean I could only check in 30kgs for the whole trip because of the BD sector?

If you're travelling LHR-x/FRA-x/PVG-x/SIN-MEL all in one journey, ie no stopover anywhere, then the 40kg allowance applies.

On the return, SYD-x/BKK-x/LHR-BEY would give you 40kg all the way thru if again, you do not stop in LHR as the longest sector is what determines the allowance.

Airlines that have their 'own' allowance that is not the norm would itself present problems.. eg TK's F class allows 60kg allowance whereas the standard is 40kg! So for example if you did LHR-x/IST-x/HKG-x/SIN-MEL, then you'll get 60kg thru as the departing carrier dictates your allowance. But once you stop in say, HKG, then the remaining allowance in Business class would be 30kg.

Confusing? You bet!

Very confusing!!
Luckily, yes it is "direct" LHR-FRA-PVG-SIN-MEL, and "direct" SYD-BKK-LHR-BEY. So in the end it is 40kg for both of those "segments".

The MEL-AKL-MEL flights, even though attached to those bookings, give only 30kg though.

Back to an original question: any need in contacting the ICC/PTS?

Lastly, would I be able to add extra bags at LHR on the return, i.e. arriving from SYD/BKK, before continuing onto Beirut? Or would this raise a few eyebrows?

I've managed to do that on other airlines at other transit points, but I can't speak for BD at LHR; but it's certainly not outside the relms of possibility.

No. Cos they can't do anything to the ticket after it has been issued. They can't add a remark to your reservation either... cos its not really a ticketing issue.

But the people who will be checking in for your first flight, ie LH in LHR and TG from AKL will know that it's 40kg and your bag will be tagged through.

BA6501 May 15, 2011 10:54 am

Thanks.

A bit irrelevant, but would the bag actually be able to be tagged through from LHR to MEL via FRA, PVG and SIN?

As in, enough boxes on the baggage tag for those 4 flights??

jbfield May 15, 2011 12:00 pm

yes..four destinations on one label is fine. I think there's a thread on that subject somewhere. Someone claimed to have got more than four on it.

BA6501 May 16, 2011 6:19 am

Thanks :)

Off to find that thread now.

Seems like a step change in baggage at BD is on the way in line with other LH family carriers. Seems like the weight concept is going and all routes will be:

Y: 1 x 23 kg
C: 2 x 32 kg
F: 3 x 32 kg

with an extra bag at the relevant weight in each class of service for *G.

Certainly a positive for me!

Effective for tickets issued 01 June '11

Nothing on the BD site yet that I can see, but the link explicitly states that this is for the whole LH Group, including BD (+LH, LX, OS, SN of course)

I need to take 3 suitcase from SYD to PVG. I can book SYD-AKL-HKG-PEK. If I want to add PVG, it would need to be a separate booking that I am looking to avoid.

If I was to book Dragonair in Y HKG-PVG would I be able to interline the 3 suitcases?

If I was to book Air China in Y PEK-PVG would I be able to interline the 3 suitcases?

Would I be able to get these flight added to my PNR?

ronanmagee May 24, 2011 2:04 pm

Off to HKT in August from DUB via ZRH and BKK.

Allowance is 30KG for all segments (Business), apart from ZRH -> BKK which is 40kg (First with TG).

Does 40KG carry over for all segments?

Should do if it's all on one PNR.
