Thinking about using Newark Airport

I'm based in Manhattan and need to rent a car. Checking around it seems like renting from the Newark location may be the best value for an avis rental car during the weekend. I am using my costco discount. Am I missing something or does this tend to be the best deal for people based in manhattan?

Thanks

Not necessarily. Where will you actually be using the car for the weekend? In New Jersey? In Manhattan? Elsewhere?

If EWR does end up being the cheapest, price the rental with an EWR pick-up, and a Manhattan return: it may cost no more. Also look at doing the same with Budget, instead of Avis. And if you will be renting with some frequency, Budget currently has a promotion for its FastBreak members (enrollment is free) that provides for a $25-off coupon after every two rentals of two days or more. (Check the promotion details to make sure that the coupon is valid for use in the NYC metro area.)

I'm looking to establish myself with a rental company as I will be renting not extremely often, but I plan on having some travel coming up as well. Some of my rentals would be to go to PA or head south to Virginia so I think Newark would be good for that. Other trips will be up into Connecticut, Mass, rest of New England. I checked Stamford and with the costco discount etc their prices tend to be about $12 higher per day than Newark and they have limited hours on the weekends for returns. I do not plan to use the rentals heavily in Manhattan as I like to avoid the city traffic, its more for getting out of the city that I need them.

OK. But limited return hours might not be an issue, if you can return to Manhattan at no extra charge.

Checking Newark now, but for Stamford it costs me an extra $20 to return it to Manhattan.

Costs like a $1 more to return it to Manhattan if rented at Newark, so that seems like a viable idea even though its a hassle to get out there to start with.

Has anyone done a rental in Stamford and dropped off in Manhattan lately?

We're driving to Boston for the weekend. We're going to take Metro North to Stamford for a Thursday evening pick up, and returning on Sunday. The Stamford Avis closes at 4pm Sunday, which is not ideal, as I'm not sure what the after-hours situation is.

For pick-up/drop-off in Stamford, the car I want is ~$200. Setting a pick-up in Stamford and drop-off at the West 54th Street location skyrockets the price to ~$800. Is this right?

Yes, depending on demand, and rate plan.

Also, remember that returning in Manhattan from NJ means paying a $15 toll for a car you're about to give up.
