Initially they tried to invalidate the contract by saying I had breached one of its clauses (The renter must return the car to the agreed location at the agreed time). I argued the point saying that the car could not be returned because it had been involved in an accident and was towed from the scene because it was wrecked. I also went to hospital that night and was not able to make contact until the next day. They eventually agreed which left me on hook for the standard deductible of $5000 in this case.
I spent the next two years arguing with them that I should only be liable for the $100 deductible as that was the stated amount in the rental contract I had with Avis. Back when this happened I had never been asked to provide evidence of my association with the AWD code or even asked about it at all. When making a reservation then picking up the car there was no way to tell if a code had been used. I found that the website and app remembered the code and even when clearing it from the reservation form it would still apply. Based on this I put it to Avis that it was their responsibility to verify the entitlement to the code before entering into a rental contract and that any contract signed by both parties was legally binding (At the time there were no clauses in the agreement about using AWD codes). Eventually they threatened to take it to court and they stated they would argue that the use of a the code that I was not entitled to made my actions fraudulent and that they would push for me to pay the entire cost of repairing the vehicle plus legal costs. I spoke with a lawyer who advised that it was probably better to pay the $5000 than risk full costs plus fees so I did. its Avis’ job to validate discounts at the counter. You shouldn’t be held liable for not being able to validate association with the code because that is their job to do that. |

2.3 Rate Eligibility Requirements. If at the time of booking, the rate in the Agreement is a conditional rate (such as a special rate, promotional rate, or corporate rate) or benefit discount code, and at the time of booking or at any time during your rental, you fail to meet the conditions of the rate, we will charge you the applicable default higher rate for similar rentals. An unauthorized use of a conditional rate or benefit discount code will be viewed as an unlawful use and theft of services for which Avis can pursue legal remedies, including but not limited to reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs, and for which Avis can void any associated discounts or rental benefits. |
Newbie here with car rentals... Are codes specific to locations? If so, anything for San Diego? Do agents check for ID (if codes are associated with companies)?

Going through this thread, I see T757205 listed as a MasterCard discount code, but I got it off of the PerksAtWork website - can anyone confirm which one it is? Am seeing a small discount when trying to book a car at Manchester airport for next week, but don't want to use it and then find out I can't pay with Amex!
I also have seen D134100 via another internal corporate site, but it appears to be for RetailPerks. For both RetailPerks and PerksAtWork, theres no membership card or anything, just a link to the Avis website and the AWD to use so no idea how one is supposed to prove to Avis that they are eligible, unless Avis want to watch them logging in to websites? |
Hi all,
I was trying to use a code (which I am eligible) but now I get the following message - seems to be something new in 2025? "This is a restricted Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) code, which cannot be used on the website." Cheers! |
Hi All,
I have a question and curious if any folks have advice. I have an AWD code from a previous employer that I have continued to use. I'm less concerned about verification issues and more curious about CDW and insurance issues. Nothing has ever happened, but I certainly want to avoid a bigger problem later. Whenever using this AWD code, I have been declining the rental car coverage and using my own personal credit card that offers rental coverage. I am also a US resident and have a comprehensive car insurance policy. I do not see any built in coverage with this code like reduced deductible, etc. From this thread, I have learned that if something happens and the rental involves an AWD code that cannot be verified there could be an issue with claims. Is it still an issue to use an old AWD code if I have declined the rental car coverage and am just planning to rely on my credit card or my own insurance? Thank you |
Hi GeoHurst33 -- did you ever get any responses about this or more information? I *think* my old companies AWD code does not include insurance, so wondering if I can continue to use it and just rely on credit card insurance?

Codes for general use?
I know in the past there have been codes posted that do not need verification that one works for a certain company. I don't remember exactly how or why that worked but apparently given to their customers and not just employees?? Anyone have one of those to use?
