Preferred Select gives you an automatic one-class upgrade (based on availibility) ... and they put a WSJ in the car too at some airports ... other than that, not much difference.

but don't they do that with preferred members to as i am a preferred meber my self

Not as far as I know, Preferred members do not get an automatic upgrade ...

I am not sure other airlines do this, but UAL gives you a double bonus. I get my regular miles (ie 200) then my Prefered Select bonus (ie 200) for a total of 400 miles.

Nice...

I am Preferred and get an upgrade everytime. Another tip, never book a mid-size car. Car rental agencies are almost always out of compacts and will give you an automatic upgrade. Last week, I was offered a mini-van, declined and was given a Jeep Cherokee.

Does anyone get any "bonus" airline miles with Select -- specifically on American. I thought I read somewhere UA was doubling them....

One key advantage of being Preferred Select is that you can sometimes get cars at airports that are otherwise sold out.

I was given Prefered Select by Avis based on my activity. United does give me matching miles (or Avis.) not sure.. but they are always double the miles. So I see a post for 200 miles and another one that states SELECT and 200 miles (total 400 miles). Nice.

I really have grown to like Avis. I use to use Hertz..but Avis does actually seem like that "try harder" and do better. Thanks for taking such good care of me!

Ah... THAT's why I'm getting double-miled. I've been made Preferred Select. For the past few months I've been scoring 1000 BA Exec Club miles on every Avis rental without knowing why. Cool.

I was finding the WSJ on my dash before and after Preferred Selecthood. And I have found Avis better than Hertz.

SELECT gives you two upgrades (if avail) for the same price. For example, I get a 'premium' car (Maxima) for the mid size price. United gave me bonus pts for being SELECT.

I had to ask for my SELECThood...even after qualifying months before. It took them at least a month to give me PREFERED, finally I got pissed and called. I ended up faxing in my info, snail mail route took over a month.

Hertz has better cars in my opinion....

I have been Select for a number of years also. I've been told that 6 rentals of at least 2 days each in 6 months makes a Preferred eligible for Select. Selects get an automatic complimentary one class upgrade if available...and "available" only means if the location has an EXCESS in its judgement. Have never heard of any entitlement to two class upgrade. I'm not sure there's much benefit to Select. LOTS of folks get one class upgrades. I like that suggestion on reserving compacts....I'll try it!

Beckles May 15, 2000 12:10 pm

Select = one-class upgrade
Presidents Club = two-class upgrade

As a Select member, I usually reserve a full-size and get upgraded to a Premium most of the time.

In MCO a few weeks ago I had a Premium reserved and got upgraded to a Luxury ...

Any amex platinum card holder can become select. Call amex and they'll give you a code number and the avis registration desk phone number. (i'd pass it along, but can't find it at the moment)
