To be honest, I think it is because of those troubles make this lifemile still very valuable.

That would apply only to posters with US credit cards. I used a non-US debit card where I don't attract penalties for transacting in USD

Amex displays it as "AIRLINE/AIR CARRIER", just the same as charges when paying for taxes on an Avianca ticket.

with the transfer and bonus, is it any lower than using cash + miles option. cash plus miles, when used in right ratio would work to around 1.5 cents a mile. how about the transfer with bonus? anyone who did it, can you share the final cost per mile?

it is 1.2 cents per mile. For example if you transfer 75k you create 93,750 miles for $1125 or 1.2 cents per mile.

1.5c / 1.25 = 1.2c
However, they quote the price in COP and USD. Depending on the prevailing exchange rate, you might be able to get slightly better (or worse) value by buying in COP if your card has no foreign exchange fee. I bought in COP and Amex put it through at 0.991 of the USD value, so I paid 1.189c/mile.

Yes but for those who did the "round trip" as last time A -> B -> A and variations including C can't repeat that performance as effectively with 15% rather than 25% because of the need to transfer in whole thousands. With 25% for every 4,000 miles transferred round trip you ended up with 6,250. With 15% you end up with 600 "orphaned" in B, so you have to transfer a minimum of 7,000 and leave 50 "orphaned in B (7,000 -> 8,050 A/B then 8,000 -> 9,200 B/A)

Good to spread some miles to other family members so that they can book from their own accounts. It saves trouble when we don't travel with them, IMO.

But none have had an acknowledgement from Avianca that that caused the problems they encountered as far as I recall; it's an assumption they made (guilty conscience?). I successfully completed A -> B -> A, have had no problems logging on, and have redeemed those points for tickets
